WEST MARINE ANNOUNCES “GREEN PRODUCT OF THE YEAR” WINNER AND BREAKTHROUGH NEW PRODUCTS FOR 2013 AT MIAMI INTERNATIONAL BOAT SHOW

West Marine, the largest specialty retailer of boating supplies and accessories, is proud to announce the winner of its fourth annual Green Product of the Year Award on Thursday, February 14, 2013 at 10:00 a.m. in the West Marine booth at the Miami International Boat Show. An important component of West Marine’s BlueFuture® initiative to help create a sustainable future, the award hopes to encourage green product development throughout the marine industry.

In addition to the Green Product of the Year, West Marine will feature their top picks for the most innovative new products for 2013.  Plus, show attendees can enter to win a $1000 Gift Card at the West Marine booth at the Miami International Boat Show.

West Marine’s Top Picks for 2013:
Columbia Omni-Freeze® ZERO – West Marine will debut Columbia’s Omni-Freeze ZERO clothing at the Miami International Boat Show.  The Omni-Freeze ZERO blue rings capitalize on your sweat to lower the overall temperature of the material, accelerate the wicking process and provide an instant and prolonged cooling for the wearer.  Be the first to own Omni-Freeze ZERO, offered at the Miami Boat Show and at West Marine Flagship Stores in Florida, beginning February 2013.

West Marine CFA Bottom Paint –The world’s first copper-free, dual biocide, water-based ablative antifouling paint uses the highest level of the new metal-free Econea biocide combined with a slime fighting inhibitor for multi-season protection. CFA Bottom Paint can be used on boats that stay in the water year-round, or those that haul in the winter, since exposure to air doesn’t change the antifouling properties. Water-based formulation is used to replace most of the volatile solvents found in most bottom paints.

Caframo Taku Fan – This easy-to-install hatch fan features push button controls, an LED lamp, and suction cup mounts with a pivoting axis.  The fan can be swiveled to let exhaust air out of the cabin or to bring in fresh air. The versatile 12 Volt Taku can also be swung down into the cabin to direct a cooling breeze right where you want it.

Lenco Autoglide Trim Tabs – Trim tabs improve the performance of almost any boat, but it’s not always easy to set them at the optimum angle. Lenco has changed that with their Autoglide control, which uses GPS and twin gyros to sense the boat’s attitude and set the trim tabs accordingly. Get better fuel economy and increase safety by keeping the bow down until you’re on a plane. The Autoglide control can be retrofitted to any boat with Lenco trim tabs.

Isotherm Smart Energy Control – The Isotherm Smart Energy Control (ISEC) maximizes the performance of your boat’s refrigeration system automatically. When the engine or shore power charger is on, the ISEC will lower your the temperature in your refrigerator to take advantage of the “free” energy available, and will use the extra-cool contents to “store cold”. When it’s time to operate using battery power, the ISEC will slow down the compressor to maximize the efficiency of the system, allowing the temperature to rise for greater savings. The result is up to a 50% reduction in energy consumption.

DeLorme inReach– This compact satellite communicator allows you to send and receive text messages from virtually anywhere in the world. Using the reliable Iridium satellite network, the inReach can also transmit emergency messages to let your friends or rescue agencies that you’re in trouble. In addition, it provides a web-accessible map interface that let’s your family know your exact location.

“We’re very excited about West Marine’s Hot Picks for 2013,” says Chuck Hawley, Vice President of Product Information at West Marine. “The goal, as always, is to find products that make boating safer, more enjoyable, or more economical, combined with that ‘got to have it’ factor. Our suppliers have done a superb job of identifying boater needs and responding to them with innovative, exciting products.”
