New Speakers Confirmed for Boating BC Conference

Shelley McIvor, Managing Director, Quadrant Marine Institute
Marine Service Technician Training in BC
 
Quadrant Marine Institute delivers BC's Marine Service Technician program in Sidney and Vancouver. Broad training plus skill assessment on the shop floor provides a foundation for any career in marine trades. Shelley will address the importance of workforce development for our industry as a whole and provide an opportunity for the local marine service industry to both support and engage in the program's future developments.
 
Shelley is a professional communication strategist with international experience consulting for the recreational marine service industry. Since joining the Quadrant team, she applies her strategies to reinforcing the connections between the marine service industry and Marine Service Technician training.

Marine Mechanical Technician Apprenticeship Program; Where to From Here?
 
With thirteen years of post-secondary experience specific to trades training - including the position of Dean, Faculty of Trades and Applied Technology at Vancouver Island University (VIU) - Guy Ellis knows the value of working collaboratively with industry. Currently the Dean, School of Transportation at BCIT, where the Marine Mechanical Technician apprenticeship program is soon to enter its second year, Guy will share a brief update and future plans for the program including opportunities for the recreational marine industry and BCIT to continue to collaborate to ensure the program’s success.

HELP SAVE THE ENVIRONMENTAL COMMISSIONER OF ONTARIO (ECO)

FOCA logoNews Week has just learned that on November 15, 2018, the Ontario Government introduced sudden plans to eliminate the office of the Environmental Commissioner of Ontario (ECO). A vote on this was rushed through on December 6. The ECO is our environmental watchdog, supporting public participation through the Environmental Registry, as well as government accountability for decisions that affect our environment, now and into the future.

FOCA (the Federation of Ontario Cottagers Association) opposes the elimination of the office of the ECO, and has written to the Premier and party leaders but we feel the marine industry should add our voice.

TIWAL UNVEILS A NEW POCKET SAILER DREAM BIG, PACK SMALL

Tiwal Pocket SailerFollowing the success of the Tiwal 3 (nearly 1,000 boats sold), Tiwal will be presenting their latest little boat at Boot Düsseldorf: Tiwal 2, the inflatable sailing dinghy which is even lighter, more compact, and is ready to sail in 15 minutes. Tiwal intends to make the Tiwal 2 the essential toy aboard cruising boats.

Designed and developed by Marion Excoffon, the Tiwal 2 inflatable sailing boat will be unveiled at Boot Düsseldorf from 19th to 27th January 2019. This small, inflatable, single-handed 2.80 m dinghy is equipped with a loose-footed sail of 5.6m².
