FROM SHOW TO SEA WITH THE NEW SUN ODYSSEY 349

Sun Odyssey

To sail the new Sun Odyssey 349 is simplicity itself. Known for his design of great performing boats in this size range, Marc Lombard delivers a terrific performing boat, comfortable inside and out, easy to sail, admired by all who see her.

This boat features a new double-spreader swept back rig from Selden. The mast arrangement completely eliminates the need for backstays (though an optional adjustable backstay is available if desired). This opens up seating in the back corners of the cockpit, perfectly complementing the twin wheel positions outboard for great viewing forward at any point of sail. A classic mast with battened mainsail is standard, complimented by a 110% genoa. Without the need for backstays a square-top mainsail is optionally available, increasing this sail area by 11% if needed in light wind areas (and it looks cool!) Of course an in-mast furling option as well as a self-tacking headsail are available should one want the ultimate ease of sail handling.

Unique to this model, carrying over from the Sunfast racing series, is the use of friction-rings for fairleads of the genoa
sheets.  What is particularly clever on the SO349 is that the double ended mainsheets are also run through these same friction-rings keeping them in perfect position and off the deck.  The standard combination of an adjustable rigid boom vang and “Y” bridle above the companionway makes for simple, efficient mainsail trim under all wind conditions and eliminates the need for the additional adjustment of a traveller.
