Declining Great Lakes Water Levels Addressed at Boating Ontario Conference

This month's Boating Ontario Conference, held in London, Ontario, raised awareness of many timely issues.  In case you missed the conference, the hot topic this year is the problem of declining water levels in the Great Lakes.

Guest presenters Aaron Thompson, of Environment Canada, and David Sweetnam, of Georgian Bay Forever, spoke on behalf of this increasingly visible problem to a large group of concerned attendees.  Breaking the issue down into understanding both the human and natural causes of the decline as well as the typical natural cycle of the water levels historically, helped conference goers to better understand the complexities of the issue, how serious it has become, and some proposed solutions.

The economic impact on local marinas, resorts and communities is really beginning to hit the pocketbook and as the fiscally draining trail trickles upward, government officials in both Canada and the United States are beginning to come on board and take the issue seriously.  The question remains though, will it be too little too late?

Watch for full details of the water levels issue in the next issue of Boating Industry Canada.
