Detroit Summer Tradition Continues With Gold Cup Races

One of the great traditions of summer in Detroit will continue as the 2011 running of the APBA Gold Cup race, July 8-10, on the Detroit River was confirmed May 26th.

“Thanks to the support of the Detroit Yacht Club, the community and a few private individuals and business supporters, we are pleased to report that we have secured funding to assure the 2011 event as scheduled,” said Tom Bertolini, President of the hosting Detroit River Regatta Association. “We want the fans and the community to know that everyone can look forward to another exciting Gold Cup event.  Meanwhile, we will continue to seek additional sponsors and strategic partners,” said Bertolini.

Tickets range from $15 General Admission; Grandstand Seats start at $45; Premier Seating ranges from $110-250. Event information and ticket sales: www.Gold-Cup.com

Besides the Unlimited Hydroplanes they will have 4 class of Offshore racers pitting their skills against each  other and the challenging Detroit River.  These are Powerboat P1 USA, SVS Offshore, Super V  Offshore and X Cat Offshore.

The Air National Guard Hydroplane Series will be joined by the boat racing tour Powerboat P1 USA at four race venues this season, including H1 Unlimited’s season opener this July in Madison, Ind., H1 Unlimited Chairman Sam Cole announced last Monday.

In addition to taking part in the Madison Regatta on July 1-3, P1 USA will race at the APBA Gold Cup in Detroit, July 8-10, and Bayfair in San Diego, September 16-18. H1 Unlimited is expected to join the P1 USA tour for a stop in Houston, Texas on September 2-4. It will be the first time Unlimited hydroplanes have raced on Clear Lake since the late 1980s.

“We welcome this opportunity to combine forces with P1 USA at several events here in the United States,” Cole said. “P1 is a fixture internationally and with H1 Unlimited’s growing international following thanks to the race in Doha, Qatar, we believe there are more opportunities to do combined events.”

CMRA

As of July 1st, 2024 the embargo is lifted on the photos and information about Four Winns’ new H9 model and it is stunning!

About a month ago, I traveled to Charlevoix, MI for a special press event to introduce the H9 to a small group of journalists. The water and the weather were a bit cool but the sun was out and Lake Charlevoix was calm and the Four Winns H9 was very impressive.
