Mercury Marine Starts Production on 8.2L Second Generation

Mercury Marine announced the company has started the production of a second-generation 8.2L engine this past week. The engine – an improved version of the 8.2L released by MerCruiser in early 2010 – has been redesigned to enhance user experience on several fronts. The engine is scheduled to reach dealerships and to be available for consumer purchase by mid-August.

It starts with the second-generation 8.2L engine block that is MerCruiser-crafted to be available in sterndrive and inboard configurations. Factory application of options such as DTS (Digital Throttle and Shift), SeaCore, and Axius will be available in the second-generation 8.2L engine.

The second-generation 8.2L engine has several improvements guaranteed to make a splash through MerCruiser’s high-horsepower community. Improved technologies in the 8.2L result in an engine that is quieter at cruising speed, easier to maintain, and easier to install. For example, relocated fluid reservoirs are more visible and more accessible than in the predecessor, making topping off fluids simpler. The improved exhaust, an induction air silencer, and improved installation equipment for OEMs are additional key attributes that contribute to the allure of the updated design.

The refreshed design of MerCruiser’s 8.2L engine reflects the philosophy that there is no replacement for displacement. The high-torque displacement of the second-generation 8.2L affirms Mercury’s unchallenged position as No. 1 on the water.
