On Wednesday, December 20, David McPhail of Boatcan Computer Boat Search contacted us to say that there was a major fire in St Clair Township burning that morning.  At the time, he said a storage building containing as many as 50 boats was ablaze at Coopmans Marina on Old River Road Port Lambton.  Witnesses reported hearing some explosions and heavy black smoke filled the air.

Fire Chief Roy Dewhirst reported that St Clair Township Firefighters from Port Lambton and Becher stations had been called to the scene just after  7am.

The University of Manitoba's Professor Popsicle (a.k.a. Gordon Giesbrecht) is hoping to save lives by giving away free copies of his DVD, Beyond Cold Water Boot Camp.

Giesbrecht has been conducting cold-water research — plenty of it with his own body — for 25 years, and the DVD is partly a look back at that.

The Anacortes, Washington-based luxury yacht builder, SanJuanYachts, have now decided to install the Niles® Intellicontrol® ICS System in every new 48-foot SanJuan48 yacht they build!

Software manufacturer Northport Systems Inc, announced that company founder Samuel Arthur Rea, Jr. died this past Sunday, December 18th following a two-year battle with cancer. Born November 10, 1944 in Indianapolis, Indiana, Sam grew up in Fort Wayne, Indiana, and attended Deerfield Academy in Massachusetts. He graduated Magna Cum Laude from Harvard University in 1966, earned his Ph.D. in Economics from Harvard University in 1972 and joined the University of Toronto faculty in 1971.

Despite the tough conditions that still prevail throughout the international leisure marine industry, METS and the SuperYacht Pavilion (SYP) 2011 confounded expectations with a boost in visitor levels, an impressive display of newly developed products and a flurry of first time exhibitors.

“The 2011 show exceeded our expectations,” said Communications and PR Manager, Annelie Koomen. “Although we had the highest number of exhibitors to date and advance visitor registrations got off to an early start, we also heard that many companies were considering reducing costs by sending fewer members of staff or for a shorter period of time.”

Mercury Marine will pay a special one-time bonus to about 1,200 of its hourly workers in Fond du Lac, Wisconsin — the vast majority union members, a company official says.

Company Spokesman Steve Fleming said despite challenging market conditions, Mercury demonstrated solid global growth in 2011 due in part to the outstanding efforts of Mercury Marine employees.

On Tuesday and Wednesday, December 13-14, leaders from every segment across the entire recreational boating community gathered in Chicago, Ill. to address how to grow the industry during a first-of-its-kind Recreational Boating Stakeholder Growth Summit.

The Summit was hosted by the National Marine Manufacturers Association (NMMA) and attended by approximately 160 executives and leaders from all industry segments including: bankers, big box retailers, consumer organizations, dealers, distributors, insurance companies, boat, engine and accessory manufacturers, marinas, boat yards, trade associations,  publishers,  yacht brokers,  marine representatives, and government groups.

The Nova Scotia Boatbuilders Association (NSBA) will be holding a three-day American Boat and Yacht Council (ABYC) Composite Boat Builder certification course at the Atlantic Beer Institute in the Brewery Market Building in Halifax (1496 Lower Water Street), on January 10th to January 12th, 2012.

Facilitated by ABYC, this complete and "all-encompassing" composites course is designed for boatbuilders and manufacturers.

About 100 representatives of the West Coast marine industry gathered at River Rock Casino Resort in Richmond BC for the BCMTA Industry Conference November 30 and December 1. National Marine Manufacturers Association President Thom Dammrich opened the session with an upbeat presentation on the state of the industry in Canada and the U.S., and opportunities for renewed growth with economic recovery.

During the 2011 Boating Ontario Conference and Trade Show, there were several awards presented and some important business advances were made as well.

At the President’s Dinner and Awards Presentation on the final day, the President’s Award was presented to Judy Semple of Hutchings Marine Products for her long-standing support of the OMOA / Boating Ontario organization as a member. Judy has been a great supporter of the industry generally, as a partner in Hutchings Marine Products.
