Ontario Sailing has announced the “Legends of Ontario Sailing” Award Winners as part of their program to, “Honour the Past to Inspire the Future.” 

The inaugural year for the “Legends of Ontario Sailing” award was 2010, during the Ontario Sailing Ruby Gala.  The award will be presented each year during Ontario Sailing’s annual fundraising gala.  Recipients for the first year of the award were the brave crews of Evergreen (RHYC) and Magistri (RCYC) that survived and endured the great storms that hit the 1979 Fastnet race.

The Canadian Power and Sail Squadrons recently received a prestigious Life Saving Society Award.

Canadian Power and Sail Squadrons is a volunteer-driven national organization with 36,000 members belonging to 162 Squadrons spread from Coast to Coast to Coast. Their emphasis is on safety and accident prevention through education, raising public awareness of boating safety issues and promotion of acquisition and appropriate use of safety equipment.

There is good news from Transport Canada for the owners of small vessels. There was the expectation that such vessels as canoes, kayaks and very small motorized vessels would now be required to be registered with Transport Canada but now, The Honourable Chuck Strahl, Minister of Transport, Infrastructure and Communities, has announced important changes to Transport Canada’s small vessel registration requirements.

West Marine has awarded the BlackTip Catch & Release Recompression Tool the grand prize for the second annual Green Product of the Year contest. The $10,000 prize was presented to the product’s inventor, retired Alaska charter fisherman, Ace Callaway.

A study on the problems of fatal barotrauma in deep-water game fish by the Oregon Fish and Wildlife Department turned into a problem-solving quest for Ace Callaway. His invention is a simple, effective, and low-cost way to reduce fish mortality rates.
