  • Northport Systems Announces Fugawi Support for Navionics Without Card Reader

Software manufacturer Northport Systems Inc. announced today that its latest version of Fugawi Marine ENC™ is the world’s first application to support Navionics® plug-and-play chips without requiring use of a proprietary Navionics Multi Card Reader. With the new upgrade, Fugawi users can simply download their Navionics charts onto their computer’s hard drive, resulting in extremely fast chart redraw and increased overall performance. Once the Navionics data is downloaded, the chart card is no longer needed and freed up for use in a chartplotter or other navigational device. The upgrade eliminates the inconvenience associated with carrying Navionics cartography chips, a card reader and cable when boating, as well as loss of data due to potential card reader failure and wear and tear from the harsh marine environment.

  • Extreme Out of the Box Thinking – The “ELYSIUM Rideabout 40”

Boating Industry Canada just had to share this one with our readers! It’s an example of extreme ‘out of the box’ thinking; and it looks like the box was a major design influence! The “ELYSIUM Rideabout 40” wants to be ridden, not driven – and it has a unique hull and steering position.

Already the name of this newly designed, one of a kind German powerboat from Lake Constance, the “ELYSIUM Rideabout 40” indicates major design differences with conventional boats. Rideabout describes the unique seat and steering position of skipper and mate. The bench seat is reminiscent of a motorcycle and is placed 1.3 meters above the boat deck.

  • Up to $500 Million Damage to Recreational Boats From Hurricane Irene

BoatUS has reported that there could be up to $500 million in damage to recreational boats resulting from Hurricane Irene. Coastal areas are usually the hardest hit when a hurricane strikes. However, early reports from Boat Owners Association of The United States (BoatUS) indicate that Hurricane Irene struck inland lake and river regions in New York and New England particularly hard, including the Hudson and Mohawk River Valleys, Lake George, NY, Lake Champlain, NY, and Lake Winnipesaukee, NH, as well as Cape Cod, MA.

The nation’s largest boat owner’s group estimates the total damage to recreational boats from South Carolina to Maine could total up to $500 million (editor’s note: this early estimate applies to boats only; this figure does not include any boating infrastructure).

  • Mercury Marine unveils the Spitfire aluminum propeller

Mercury Propellers is proud to introduce “Spitfire,” their first four-blade aluminum performance propeller designed for boaters using 25 hp to 125 hp outboards.
