The 61st Canadian Water Ski Championships concluded on Sunday with a pending world record performance by Cambridge, Ontario’s Whitney McClintock. Subject to review by the International Waterski and Wakeboard Federation, the 22 year old bested the women’s world overall record by 5 points as a result of her outstanding combined national championship scores in slalom, tricks and jump.

In slalom, McClintock won the Canadian title while amassing major overall points by eclipsing the Canadian record with a score of 61 buoys, which is 1 buoy at the 10.25m rope length, only 1 buoy shy of the world record for that event. McClintock recently returned to Canada from Dubna, Russia, where she captured her second consecutive world championship slalom gold medal.

McClintock added Canadian championship medals in the trick and jump events with a trick score of 8680 points and a jump of 48.5 metres, which also clinched her 4th gold, the Canadian overall title.

Not to be outdone, older brother Jason McClintock also made the family proud. He won two gold medals, dominating the slalom and trick events with near personal best and world class performances. Skiing to 1.25 buoys at the 10.25m rope length gave him a slalom score of 61.25 buoys and a first place finish. A second gold came as a result of an incredible trick run comprised of over 18 high degree of difficulty tricks that amassed a score of 10,360 points.

Ironically and fittingly, Whitney and Jason’s father, Jeff McClintock had been inducted into Water Ski and Wakeboard Canada’s Hall of Fame as a Builder the night before, for his extensive development of the sport as a coach, official and technical expert.

In the men’s jump event, national team athlete, Kole Magnowski of Russell, Manitoba placed first with a jump of 57.9 metres, barely beating the 2nd place 57.5 metre jump of Kevin Melnuk (Toronto, Ontario) and Stephen Collins (Toronto, Ontario) jump of 56.2 metres.

A total of 117 water skiers from across Canada competed in the 61st edition of the Canadian Water Ski Championships.
