You may have noticed the story in Boating Industry Canada News Week Digest last week talking about the $10,000,000 USD grant from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) Marine Debris Program to clean up abandoned boats from America’s waterways. It seems that anyone can apply for this and in my work, I have seen many abandoned boats around American city harbours. The problem is that fiberglass just never really goes away.

Andy Thompson named Aluminum Boat Group President; Dirk Hyde to retire
Brunswick Corporation, on June 14th, 2024, has named Andy Thompson president of its Aluminum Boat Group division effective immediately. Thompson will oversee all commercial and operational aspects of the Aluminum Boat Group division, which includes brands Harris, Crestliner, Lund, Lowe, Thunder Jet and Princecraft. Thompson succeeds Dirk Hyde who will be retiring later this summer after more than 30 years with the company.

Recently, there was a significant backlash in the United States when Wendy’s announced they would be testing a “dynamic pricing” model where the cost of menu items would fluctuate based on demand. Public reaction was immediate and Wendy’s back-pedaled and brought out a special $1.00 burger offer to quell the anger. But, does it make sense to charge more when there is big demand and to offer better prices when demand is weaker?

The subject line for this February 6th 2024 edition of Boating Industry Canada News Week Digest is drawn from the announcement (story below) by Brunswick Corporation that their Freedom Boat Club delivered 600,000+ member trips in 2023. That’s an impressive number of trips to me and the Freedom Boat Club (and other similar boat clubs) offer a fleet of mainly larger, mainly new boats, supported by an on-site staff and who require members to have at least some level of training before they cast off.

Yesterday I spent a productive and enjoyable day at the annual C.C. Marine Dealer Trade Show and I had an opportunity to speak to many people in our industry. It was an excellent event as always and the feelings were very positive, but as I wrote in the Editor’s Message last week titled, “Without warning, VC17 is coming off the market”, there are scary things lurking out there and we need to be aware of the challenges that could have a negative impact on boating.
