  • MANY NEW MODELS DEBUT AT THE 2013 FT LAUDERDALE INT’L BOAT SHOW

    In his speech at the Industry Breakfast event that traditionally opens the Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show, manager Efram (Skip) Zimbalist III announced that the show’s footprint had expanded to be by far the biggest in the show’s history.
    In terms of revenue will also be the biggest show in the history of the Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show which has a staggering 3,000,000 ft.² of exhibit space across three different locations. The indoor area at the Convention Center has been expanded by 30,000 more square feet to accommodate more of the smaller boats including pontoons, so this isn’t just a super yacht show.

  • BUSY 2013 CONTINUES FOR PHILBROOK’S BOATYARD

    Philbrook's Boatyard of Sidney BC has enjoyed a busy year that shows no signs of slowing as the boating season winds down. Jerry Boone, yard project manager, says increased spending by US boat owners drove a significant increase in business over 2012, helped along by an extra-sunny and long boating season. “We're busy, way busier than last year. Fifty percent of our business is still from the US – US boaters are spending a lot more money this year than last, and it's apparent,” said Boone. “Also, it was a beautiful summer, and people used their boats more…and broke stuff or decided they needed new gear, more work, upgraded electronics, and so on.”

    Dealers were pleased to discover the 2014 line up at the Kimpex Marine Trade Show, held in Niagara Falls 2 weeks ago.  Many new products were presented and customers were invited to assist to seminars presented by the suppliers.   • SEMINARS AND CONNECTFEST TO BE METS 2013 HIGHLIGHTS

    Three seminars on advancements in marine electronics technology will be held at the METS 2013 (Amsterdam) trade show on November 19 and 20. Organized by the National Marine Electronics Association (NMEA), the seminars will cover Automatic Identification Systems (AIS), CHIRP sonar, and the NMEA OneNet® standard that is currently under development.

    As part of the marine electronics education programs at METS, the NMEA will also offer an NMEA 2000® ConnnectFest, a "live" demonstration of the NMEA 2000® networking standard in operation.

    Captain Phab a manufacturer of environmentally sustainable cleaning products in Peterborough Ontario announced the purchase of Gelcote International. Craig Willoboughy, President of Captain Phab was very excited with the new addition to his already extensive product line. Gelcote founded in 1978 by Phil Garby is world leader in Gelcote and fibreglass repair kits and work closely with several manufacturers such as BRP to match colours and material composition.Phil has come back into then business to help with marketing and develop new products.

  • FORT LAUDERDALE BOAT SHOW ENJOYS BIG OPENING DAY

    The Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show opened under partly cloudy skies Thursday as the biggest show yet in the event's 54-year history and, judging by show-goer comments, one of the best.

    Howard Blitstein timed his visit from Costa Rica to see his mother in Fort Lauderdale with the boat show. "It's very busy for the first day," he said. "I've seen a lot of new center console-type boats that I never heard of. I'm impressed with the boats."

    This past Sunday, October 27 and Monday, October 28, the 12th Annual C.C. Marine Trade Show was held in Niagara Falls, Ontario at the Scotiabank Convention Centre. In spite of it being a busy time of year for all the marine dealers, the turnout at the C.C. Marine Trade Show seemed really good. The Scotiabank Convention Center provides very spacious accommodations, but the show floor was busy and buzzing throughout. The conference was a testament to the value of good planning.

  • 75TH ANNIVERSARY OF CANADIAN POWER & SAIL SQUADRONS CULMINATES AT OCTOBER AGM

    A highlight of the Canadian Power and Sail Squadrons Annual General Meeting held October 24, 25 and 26 in Toronto, was the culmination of the nation-wide Flag Relay celebrating their 75th Anniversary. The Canadian Power and Sail Squadrons began in 1937 when three Canadians from Windsor, Ontario crossed the Ambassador Bridge to take the United States Power Squadron Junior Piloting course at the Detroit Power Squadron.

  • SIMCOE NORTH MPP INTRODUCES BILL TO PROTECT TRADESPEOPLE FROM COLLEGE OF TRADES FEES

    Simcoe North MPP Garfield Dunlop introduced a private member’s bill to ensure employers of tradespeople never have to pay a fee to the Ontario College of Trades. “There’s no reason if you’ve got a hair dressing salon or a sheet metal shop or whatever the trade may be that you should be paying a fee to the regulating college,” Dunlop said Tuesday. “I want to see it taken out.” In April, the college began charging tradespeople in 22 licensed trades — in which being a member of the college is compulsory — an annual fee of $122.
