  • JUDGING PANEL ANNOUNCED FOR IBEX INNOVATION AWARDS

    The International Boatbuilders’ Exhibition and Conference (IBEX) announced a panel of seven marine journalists to judge the 2013 IBEX Innovation Awards. “The Innovation Awards honor excellence in product development in thirteen areas of the marine industry, including boatbuilding methods and materials, inboard and outboard engines, hardware, interior parts and furnishings, and safety equipment,” said Anne Dunbar, IBEX Show Director. “This is an opportunity for truly leading-edge technology to get recognition and exposure.”

  • TORONTO-BASED TEAM WINS SIKORSKY PRIZE FOR HUMAN-POWERED HELICOPTER FLIGHT

    The American Helicopter Society has officially declared AeroVelo winner of the Igor I. Sikorsky Human Powered Helicopter Competition. After a thorough and rigorous independent analysis of the flight data of June 13th 2013 12:43 EDT, the AHS Human-Powered Helicopter Committee concluded that indeed Atlas’ epic flight 1) exceeded 60 seconds duration, 2) exceeded 3m in height, and 3) remained within a 10m x 10m box.

The team's bicycle-powered craft is the largest such helicopter to have flown.

    Class Afloat established the Class Afloat ‘Young Sailor Scholarship’ to assist two students, endorsed by their sailing school, sail training program or yacht club, to participate in an extraordinary educational experience—attending high school while sailing worldwide aboard a majestic square-rigged tall ship. We are pleased to announce this year’s recipients, Ellyn Byrns and Xaver Löhr. Ellyn Byrns of Saskatoon, SK has been a member of her provincial sailing team since 2005 and was hired as a sailing instructor for the Provincial Sailing Program in 2012.

  • 32 BOATS PARTICIPATED IN THE NATIONAL BANK EASTER SEALS CHARITY REGATTA RAISING $165,000

    There was sun, sun and fun at last weekend’s National Bank Easter Seals Charity Regatta at the Royal Vancouver Yacht Club. Thirty-two boats participated in the PHRF handicap race with flying sails and no-flying sails divisions, and helped raise $165,000 for Vancouver Easter Seals House.   • TERRY CONRAD FIRST CERTIFIED MARINE SERVICE TECHNICIAN IN NOVA SCOTIA

    Terry Conrad of Conrad Marine Sales & Service Ltd. is Nova Scotia’s first Certified Marine Service Technician. The Apprenticeship Training Division of the Nova Scotia Department of Labour and Advanced Education is responsible to provide relevant and responsive apprenticeship training and certification system that meets Nova Scotia’s needs for skilled trades professionals and there are currently 66 designated Trades in Nova Scotia.  A Marine Service Technician services and repairs, refits and upgrades marine vessels power and sail, including structural, cosmetic, electrical and mechanical work. In order to qualify for the Certification, a marine technician must have substantial experience working in the occupation.

  • NADEN BOATS PINK BOAT TOUR COMPLETES SUCCESSFUL WEEK

    With just one week under its belt, The PINK Boat Tour, co-sponsored by Naden Boats and the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation CIBC Run for the Cure North Bay has sold $5,000 worth of tickets in a raffle to win a Naden PINK Fisherman Package.   • SAIL-IN CINEMA – TORONTO PORT AUTHORITY’S FLOATING MOVIE THEATRE RETURNS

    Toronto Port Authority (TPA) is bringing back its highly anticipated free movie festival, Sail-In Cinema™, to the city’s waterfront. For three nights in August, Sugar Beach will be transformed into Toronto’s largest outdoor theatre where lovers of film and the outdoors alike can watch movies on a two-sided screen anchored to a barge on Lake Ontario. From August 15 to 17 Torontonians, their families and friends, will be able to enjoy movies from land or boat, starting at dusk (approximately 8:45 p.m.) on each of the three nights. The two-sided screen 700-pound screen is four stories tall and will sit on a 60 x 90 foot floating barge.
