World Ocean Day and North Sails

World Ocean Day

June 10, 2025

On June 8th, which is World Oceans Day, North Sails joined IFAW (International Fund for Animal Welfare) to protect whales with the updated Whale Alert app—empowering ocean lovers to log sightings, prevent ship strikes, and safeguard our seas.

Why Whales Matter
Whales are nature’s climate engine—storing carbon and boosting oxygen-producing phytoplankton. As keystone species, they support ecosystems and coastal communities. Six out of the 13 ‘great whale’ species are either endangered or vulnerable, but slowing ships can help keep them safe.

Ready To Act?
Whether you enjoy getting out on the ocean or soaking it up from the shore, you can play a vital role in slowing the ships and saving the whales. Download the App…

The concept was originally proposed in 1992 by Canada’s International Centre for Ocean Development and the Ocean Institute of Canada at the Earth Summit – UN Conference on Environment and Development in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
