Marine Careers Expo Visits West Coast to Boost Canadian Marine Workforce

October 14, 2025

By Mathew Channer

The Fall tour of the Marine Careers Expo (MCE) began at North Vancouver on Saturday, September 20, hosted by the Royal Canadian Navy, Canadian Coast Guard, and the Canadian Marine Careers Foundation (CMCF)

More than 20 other organizations and companies participated in the Vancouver event, including BC Ferries and BC Coast Pilots.

The Expo showcases exciting careers and job opportunities in the marine sector and offers interaction with industry professionals and immersive experiences including tours onboard a Royal Canadian Navy vessel and a Canadian Coast Guard vessel.

Now in its 3rd year, this is the first time the Expo has visited the West Coast.

It will also be held in Victoria, Windsor, Toronto and Montreal.

The Expo comes at a critical time, with Canada facing a growing shortage of marine workers according to a recent study by the CMCF, which suggested Canada will need 8,300 new marine workers in the next 5 years.

CMCF Executive Director Julia Fields says ongoing labour shortages are threatening the marine sector’s growth and sustainability, posing serious risk to supply chains and economic stability.

“Canada’s marine sector is vital to the national economy, not only for its direct contributions but also for the many industries and communities that rely on efficient marine transportation of passengers and cargo,” she said.
