Written in partnership with Saniflo: Four Factors to Consider When Selecting Marine Plumbing

Sanimarin Maxlite Plus

Dec 10, 2024

When it comes to boating, plumbing might not be the first thing on your mind. However, for extended stays on the water, a reliable marine plumbing system is as essential as fuel or navigation equipment. Saniflo’s Sanimarin systems offer a cutting-edge solution for marine plumbing needs, combining efficiency, comfort, and eco-friendliness. Here are the key considerations to keep in mind when selecting a marine plumbing system:

1.     Easy Disposal of Waste-Tank Contents

According to the National Boating Safety School, Canada has strict rules regarding pollution linked with recreational boating. The Oceans Act protects marine environments, including inland waters (a surface area of approximately 2.5 million square kilometres).

It is illegal to dump sewage into Canada’s waterways, as it poses a risk to swimmers (via bacterial infections) and to the environment.

Raw, untreated sewage, known as black water, is the product of marine toilets. Your toilet must be fitted with a holding tank so black water can be stored and later disposed of at a pump-out station. Dual systems with ‘Y’ valves that allow waste to be discharged from the boat are illegal.

Sanimarin systems simplify waste disposal by controlling the amount of flushing water used, ensuring that the waste is properly macerated and pumped to a holding tank. The system’s powerful maceration technology allows flexible placement of holding tanks, whether above or below sea level, for easier operation and maintenance.

Saniflo offers three models of electric macerating toilet systems for your boat bathroom:

  • The Sanimarin® 4 is similar to a traditional toilet with its standard height and user-friendly bowl size. This toilet is connected to the macerator, which can discharge effluent through a 1-inch or 1.5-inch plastic pipe 10 feet vertically and/or 100 feet horizontally.
  • For more confined spaces, the Sanimarin® 31 offers a low-profile, compact design with a contemporary finish and quiet operation. It discharges effluent 10 feet vertically and/or 100 feet horizontally through a 1-inch or 1.5-inch plastic pipe.
  • The Sanimarin® Maxlite + has a lightweight plastic toilet with a built-in self-priming sea water pump that easily replaces hand pump units. It also discharges effluent 10 feet vertically and/or 100 feet horizontally through a 1-inch or 1.5-inch plastic pipe.

Greywater includes drainage from sinks and kitchens, and also laundries (on larger boats). Legally, no discharge should include solid matter or cause any sheen on the water. In most cases, recreational vessel owners should dispose of their greywater when on land, far from the shore.

For gray water removal from sinks or showers, the Sanimarin® Pump offers compact and efficient functionality. It can discharge up to 12 feet vertically or 120 feet horizontally, ensuring all your plumbing needs are covered.

2.     Compact and Powerful Flushing System

Space is at a premium on any vessel, and the Sanimarin product range is designed with this in mind. Models like the Sanimarin® 31 offer low-profile, contemporary designs perfect for confined areas while delivering powerful flushing performance. The macerator-equipped systems pump wastewater to holding tanks quietly and efficiently, providing the reliability and comfort you’d expect at home.

3.     Less Water and Electricity Usage

Efficiency is critical for marine plumbing systems. Sanimarin systems minimize water consumption with a dual-option flushing system that lets users choose between freshwater and seawater. Additionally, its ultra-low electricity consumption—less than 0.2% of a boat’s daily usage—helps conserve resources, allowing longer voyages without compromising comfort.

4.     Reliable Warranty

Durability is a must in the harsh marine environment. Saniflo Sanimarin products are engineered to provide long-lasting performance. When registered online, the range comes with a three-year limited warranty, giving boat owners added peace of mind.

Proper marine plumbing ensures a safe, comfortable voyage. Saniflo’s Sanimarin range meets regulations, conserves resources, and brings home-like convenience to the water—an ideal upgrade or addition for any boater.
