Jan 12, 2021Many OEMs and owners still opt for round instrument displays. The VL Flex 52 gauge from Veratron is a simple and cost-effective solution that competes head-to-head with multifunction TFT screens for usability. A unique all-in-one design supports a broad range of sensors. It can be programmed for up to 22 sets of data with a tap from a mobile device.
The 1.44" Veratron VL Flex 52 display has a single data layout with a large numeric value and colored bar graph. Unlike analog gauges, it can be configured to display two data sets simultaneously—an important consideration when rigging a small dash.
Alarms can be set to trigger at configured thresholds. The VL Flex 52 then displays easy-to-see bright red numbers and bar graphs.
OEMs will appreciate needing to stock only one part, no matter how many sensors they install on a boat. Plus, nine bezels are available to match any dashboard décor.
Built for a marine environment, the sunlight-readable VL Flex 52 has a PMMA lens with an anti-fog coating. The IP67 waterproof device has a 2" flame-retardant polycarbonate housing with spinlock or flush mount installation. It operates at 12/24V and has over-voltage and reverse polarity protection. An 8-pin Tyco/Hirschmann MQS plug makes for quick wiring. The gauge is CE, Reach and RoHS compliant.
The Veratron VL Flex 52 is fully configurable for frequency input analog sensors such as engine RPM and speed. It also can be used for resistive input like tank level, temperature, pressure, and rudder and trim.
With digital ports, the VL Flex 52 interfaces with the most advanced systems. LIN connectivity enables use with Veratron's innovative Intelligent Battery Sensor. As a CAN port, it supports NMEA 2000® or SAE J1939 input. While configured as an NFC interface, it works with contactless sensors. In total, the device can display 22 unique data sets.
Configuring the Veratron VL Flex 52 is simple with the Android or iOS companion app. It has an embedded passive NFC receiver so power and pairing are unnecessary. The mobile device is simply tapped against the instrument to connect, then set up as needed. This method is ideal for boatbuilders to program units right out of the box and have them working as soon as they're plugged in.
Veratron's VL Flex 52 is available as a configurable gauge or bundled as a 12V or 24V kit with the award-winning Intelligent Battery Monitor. Prices start at $119.99.

Recreational craft and invasive species – how to manage biofouling to stop the spread
New Biofouling Management for Recreational Boating Report is published

Invasive alien species are known to be one of the biggest drivers of biodiversity loss, and their management especially in marine environments is incredibly challenging. Therefore, the most cost effective away of addressing their impacts is to prevent their spread to new areas.
