Lunenburg Wooden Boat Reunion and Regatta Will Be July 28/29 in Lunenburg NS

May 7, 2012

Started last year, the Lunenburg Wooden Boat Reunion and Regatta is a two-day event that began as a celebration of all things wooden boat. Certainly, the rebuilding of Nova Scotia’s sailing ambassador, the Schooner Bluenose II, currently continuing at Lunenburg, was part of the inspiration but of course this area has a long history as a ship and boatbuilding port.

A full slate of weekend events includes the Nova Scotia Schooner Association’s annual Heritage Cup Race (plus this year, the festival will lead directly into the association’s Schooner Race Week, which will directly follow the Reunion and also be based out of Lunenburg); there are also sloop and small boat races; last year there was even a Putt-Putt Race between three double-ended wooden boats powered by make and break engines. There will also be boat shop tours, demonstrations of boatbuilding, sailmaking, oar leathering and other marine skills, musical entertainment and children’s activities.

The Reunion takes place on the historic Lunenburg waterfront, including the docks of the Fisheries Museum of the Atlantic, several wharves owed and operated by the Waterfront Development Corporation Ltd., the docks of the historic Adams & Knickle fishing company, The Dory Shop and on down to the historic former Smith and Rhuland Shipyard property where the original Bluenose was built and the modern Bluenose II is being rebuilt.

Wouldn’t that make a great summer vacation trip?
