The August Port of Orillia Waterfront Festival started as the Centre of Power Boat Show in 1987. The name was based on data that showed Orillia was central to the highest concentration of power boating in the country. Several economic cycles have affected the event’s original format. Working with the “Discover Boating” program, which was designed to attract “new” people into boating, gave rise to offering more activities to enjoy while at the event. Boat sales are still a centre piece out on the docks but today’s event it is a blend of the many recreational and lifestyle activities and their products. There’s also entertainment, product demos land and water, selection of foods, music, water ski shows, plus an zany annual cardboard boat race event that combined make the Orillia Waterfront Festival the fun summer weekend event it is today. Attendance 8 to 12 thousand depending on weather.
