REPLACEMENT OF HORSESHOE LAKE DAM, MINDEN HILLS; TRENT-SEVERN WATERWAY NATIONAL HISTORIC SITE

Horseshoe Lake Dam

Jan 23, 2017

Horseshoe Lake Dam, at the outlet of Horseshoe Lake, near Minden, Ontario was built in 1909. Work is currently underway to replace the dam in full, to meet modern design standards for performance and public safety. This work is a part of the Government’s unprecedented investment of more than $600 million toward infrastructure on the Trent-Severn and its reservoir lakes.

An excavator sits on a rock fill cofferdam upstream of Horseshoe Lake Dam on January 3, 2017.

Horseshoe Lake Road (County Road 20) in Haliburton County near Minden is now closed temporarily near the Horseshoe Lake Dam, at the Bethel Road Bridge, to accommodate staging for the project. Though work to replace the dam will be ongoing until late summer 2017, this road closure will last only a portion of that time, until approximately the end of February 2017. A pedestrian access pathway is in place alongside the closure. Residents are advised to avoid the area if possible and follow posted road side detour signs accordingly.

The contractor is currently working toward diverting the Gull River around the construction site by constructing cofferdams. This will allow the completion of the first stages of work, which will include the demolition of the West side of the dam and its replacement. This demolition may begin as early as the week of January 16.

About a month ago, I traveled to Charlevoix, MI for a special press event to introduce the H9 to a small group of journalists. The water and the weather were a bit cool but the sun was out and Lake Charlevoix was calm and the Four Winns H9 was very impressive. This is a 29-foot 11-inch luxury day boat with a 9- foot 2-inch beam and it features a fabulous expansive flat floor all the way from the bow rider area to the transom and the swim platform.
