Industry applauds USGC proposal to Harmonize Canada-U.S. PFD Standards

NMMA Canada

Oct 10, 2023

NMMA Canada has reported that the U.S. Coast Guard (USCG) has proposed harmonizing personal flotation device (PFD) standards between the United States and Canada. This move is crucial as it would facilitate cross-border cooperation, promote safety, and ensure regulatory consistency in maritime activities.

Harmonization would bring many benefits. It would negate the necessity for individuals to switch PFD types when crossing borders, ensuring consistent safety standards for boaters and water enthusiasts. Additionally, it would bolster cooperation and interoperability between the USCG and the Canadian Coast Guard (CCG), aiding joint operations, search and rescue efforts, and information sharing due to the universal familiarity with PFD standards and equipment.

Manufacturers, too, would reap benefits from a unified regulatory framework, promoting efficiency and consistency in PFD production and distribution. Both industry and consumers would gain, with reduced trade barriers ensuring a broader range of high-quality, compliant PFD options.

The proposed alignment of PFD standards by the US and Canada sets a positive international example, contributing to a safer, more cohesive global maritime community. NMMA fully supports the USCG’s initiative, which you can read more about here
