The Sharrow™ Propeller is awarded as one of TIME’s Best Inventions of 2023

Best Inventions 2023 Sharrow MX Propeller

Oct 31, 2023

Sharrow Marine, a leader in high-performance propeller design, has announced that the Sharrow MX™ Propeller was selected as one of TIME’s Best Inventions of 2023. TIME’s annual list recognizes innovations that have significantly impacted the way we live. The Sharrow MX™ Propeller was hailed by TIME as “80% quieter than competitors, making it less disruptive to wildlife, and its looping design makes it up to 30% more efficient than standard boat propellers.”

The Sharrow™ Propeller, invented by Greg Sharrow, offers significant design improvements over conventional propellers and is recognized as the first major advancement in propeller technology since the 1830s. The Sharrow MX™ Propeller’s loop-shaped design solves the most basic problem of rotary propulsion, eliminating or substantially reducing tip vortices and cavitation, which offers incredible performance gains over traditional propellers, maximizing efficiency, sustainability and performance while minimizing noise. Additionally, it makes for a more comfortable and fun boating experience, and is a beloved product with thousands of units sold worldwide.

“We are thrilled to be one of the recipients of TIME’s Best Inventions of 2023. It is a testament to our incredibly talented, dedicated, and innovative team,” said Greg Sharrow, Inventor of The Sharrow™ Propeller and CEO of Sharrow Engineering and Sharrow Marine. “This is an exciting moment for our company, as we continue to grow rapidly within the marine industry and expand the Sharrow Propeller technology to other industries like the aviation, industrial, and energy sectors. It is an absolute honor to have our hard work recognized by such an icon as TIME.”

To compile the list, nominations are solicited from TIME’s editors and correspondents around the world, and through an online application process, paying special attention to growing fields—such as AI, green energy, and sustainability. TIME then evaluates each contender on a number of key factors, including originality, efficacy, ambition, and impact.

Of the new list, TIME’s editors write: “The result is a list of 200 groundbreaking inventions (and 50 special mention inventions)—including the world’s most powerful supercomputer, a game-changing entertainment venue, and a new shape—that are changing how we live, work, play, and think about what’s possible.”

Sharrow Marine’s inclusion on the TIME Best Inventions list is the latest achievement in the company’s success. Sharrow recently announced an exclusive, worldwide licensing agreement for large inboard propellers, with Australia-based VEEM Ltd., to produce a groundbreaking, state-of-the-art series of SHARROW by VEEM propellers that are dramatically quieter and more fuel-efficient than any inboard propeller currently on the market. The Sharrow MX™ Propeller was also named a finalist in Fast Company’s 2023 Innovation by Design Awards in the Products category.

The association is very well supported and virtually any significant marine electronics company that you could name, was represented there on the Exhibitor list at the Expo as well as all being NMEA members and very supportive of the organization.
