Boating Industry Canada readers – Have You Read the Safe Quiet Lakes Survey Results?

December 9, 2025

Safe Quiet Lakes is a volunteer group who seem to have come together over a shared opposition to what they feel are noisy, fast or irritating boats and boating practices. The logo (above) is their logo and the text below, is their follow up to a professional survey they have conducted that supports their position on boating in cottage country. We believe that members of the boating industry and boating enthusiasts, should be aware of this group, their position on boating and their future plans. This is a well-funded, well-organized lobby group with some views that could restrict or ban some boating activities.

Once every four years since 2013, Safe Quiet Lakes takes the pulse of Ontarios lake communities—and the 2025 Your Lakes, Your Views survey is the most comprehensive yet. With more than 7,100 participants and over 160,000 words of comments, the message is clear: people care deeply about their lakes, their safety, and the experiences they share with family and friends.

The survey reveals that most lake users feel their time on the water is almost ideal. Lakes remain cherished places for connection across generations, whether through paddling, swimming, or simply enjoying nature. But the findings also highlight growing challenges that threaten that experience—especially noise, reckless boating, and increasingly powerful wake-generating technologies.

One of the most striking insights is the overwhelming consensus around responsibility. Across 90% of respondents, there is strong agreement that lakes should support mixed use, and that this requires courtesy, community norms, and appropriate enforcement. Respondents also overwhelmingly believe environmental stewardship is a shared responsibility—and that power boat operators hold an even greater role in ensuring safe coexistence on the water.

Concerns about wakes and noise continue to rise, but the survey points to practical, collaborative solutions. Many support designated distances from shore for wake activities and the expansion of no-wake zones. Education also emerges as a priority, particularly for renters and new lake users.

While a small group of power-boating enthusiasts holds very different views, the broader consensus is powerful. It shows a community aligned around protecting the lakes they love—and committed to solutions that keep them safe, quiet, and enjoyable for everyone.
