2012 Canadian Olympic and Paralympic Sailors Announced
The Canadian Yachting Association is pleased to announce the following Olympic and Paralympic sailors who will be nominated to the Canadian Olympic Committee and Canadian Paralympic Committee for inclusion on the 2012 Canadian Olympic and Paralympic team.
The formal announcement took place at the Weymouth & Portland International Sailing Academy, home of the 2012 Olympic & Paralympic Sailing venue. Canadian Yachting Association Executive Director, Paddy Boyd – “Our sailing athletes have worked long and hard to arrive at the pinnacle of their sport, represented by the Olympic and Paralympic regattas. We wish them every success at the Games and assure them of our continuing support.”
Laser Sailor, David Wright – “The Olympic selection was not easy but in hindsight it was a good experience to get ready for the Olympic regatta. Looking forward to Weymouth I have been preparing very well and anything can happen, so I will be looking to start strongly and to fight hard all the way through to the medal race on August 6th.”
470 Sailor, Mike Leigh – “It feels fantastic to have qualified for the London Olympics. Luke and I have been working incredibly hard over the past 14 months to learn how to sail the 470 and will continue pushing hard over these next couple of months. We are very fortunate to have a world class support team, helping us all the way and look forward to carrying our momentum through the Olympics.”
Star Sailor, Tyler Bjorn – “Making the 2012 Olympic team has been very surreal. It has been a dream of mine since early in my career and one I thought had passed me by. To have another chance and make good on the deal with a great friend as well as the opportunity to share it with my kids makes it all the more special.”
Paralympic Sailor, 2.4mR, Paul Tingley – "Going into my fourth Games, the excitement and challenge does not dissipate at all. The Canadian trails were tough, but they set you up to rival against the best in the world with the high hopes of winning Gold again!”
The Olympic Sailing Competition will run from 29 July to 11 August 2012.Spectators at the Weymouth and Portland National Sailing Academy will be treated to Finn & Star action on opening day. Medal Races and Victory Ceremonies start on 5 August with the competition closing on 11 August after the women's match racing finals.
The Paralympic Sailing will run from September 1 to September 6 2012 at the Weymouth and Portland National Sailing Academy.
