Atlantic XL Sets Industry Benchmark in Additive Manufacturing

First facility in Canada and the Americas to receive Lloyd’s Register accreditation

From St. John’s, Newfoundland and Labrador comes the news that Atlantic XL Inc., a pioneer in advanced manufacturing and industrial technology, has become the first company in Canada – in fact in North and South America – to receive Additive Manufacturing Facility Qualification from Lloyd’s Register (LR).

The accreditation follows an independent audit of Atlantic XL’s St. John’s facility and provides third-party assurance that its additive manufacturing processes operate under internationally recognized quality controls. Moreover, the qualification validates the safety, and repeatability of industrial-grade metal components produced at the facility.

All aspects of Atlantic XL’s SLM® 280 laser powder bed fusion 3D metal printer processes, including design, material handling, build procedures, post-processing and inspection are covered by the assessment, says Atlantic XL.

Furthermore, Atlantic XL notes their Powder Bed Fusion (PBF) system is compatible with a wide range of industrial alloys and capable of producing high-precision components for energy, marine, aerospace and industrial applications. Due to the robust and flexible additive manufacturing process, certifying the facility for new materials is both straightforward and efficient, allowing for easy expansion to accommodate diverse customer needs.

The globally recognized qualification was issued in line with LR’s “Guidance Notes for the Manufacture, Testing and Certification of Additive Manufactured Metallic Parts” (published in November 2025).

Accordingly, Atlantic XL stresses that the accreditation demonstrates process traceability, consistency and rigorous quality assurance, enabling regional industries to access a locally based facility meeting internationally recognized standards.

“Achieving LR’s Additive Manufacturing Facility Qualification is a significant milestone for Atlantic XL and our customers,” says Sean Morgan, Director of Operations at Atlantic XL.

“This qualification confirms that our additive manufacturing operations are underpinned by a robust quality management system and meet rigorous international standards. It reinforces our commitment to delivering safe, repeatable and high‑quality metal components. The next phase of our certification journey will build on this foundation through the qualification of materials and processes.”

Trevor Butler, Business Development Manager for Offshore Energy at LR, says Atlantic XL’s AM facility is the first in North and South America, to receive LR Qualification.

“This underlines a significant achievement from one of the country’s long-established pioneers in advanced manufacturing and industrial technology,” adds Trevor. “Atlantic XL has demonstrated a strong commitment to quality, innovation and process assurance. We are grateful to have been chosen by Atlantic XL to deliver this certification and are eager to continue to partner with them as they grow their AM capabilities.”

Atlantic XL says its additive manufacturing capabilities support a broad range of industrial applications, onshore and offshore energy infrastructure parts, medical and research-focused components and aerospace structural components requiring high material performance and precision.

The company also points out that integrating advanced metal additive manufacturing with established engineering, inspection, and post-processing expertise allows customers to reduce lead times, optimize component performance, and strengthen overall supply chain resilience.
