Barnacle Systems awarded “Product of the Year” at Victoria Tech Community Awards

Viatec Award 2022

Dec 19, 2022

Barnacle Systems has been awarded “Product of the Year” for its new product, BRNKL Black, at the Victoria Tech Community Awards. Winners were announced at the awards gala on December 8th, 2022 at the Victoria Conference Centre.

For over 20 years, the awards gala has given Victoria’s technology companies a chance to be recognized and celebrated for their contributions that put Greater Victoria on the map as the fastest-growing technology region in British Columbia. This year saw a record-breaking 187 nominations and 59 finalists from 47 companies for ten different award categories.

Finalists for the “Product of the Year” award were selected based on total sales and sales growth, customer adoption and market share, along with market disruption and level of innovation. The winning product was chosen from live audience polling at the event after a short video clip from each of the finalists was shown.

Barnacle Systems was recognized for its new product, BRNKL Black, which is like a ‘black box’ or ‘flight recorder’ for government and military boats. This hardware product was developed as a completely ‘Made in Canada’ product with a 96% Canadian Content Value to support Canadian government customers.

Since the announcement of BRNKL Black in 2022, federal contracts have been secured with the Royal Canadian Navy, Canadian Special Operations Forces Command, and Defence Research and Development Canada, among others. These projects have BRNKL Black being deployed on electric boats, monitoring damage control systems on large Navy ships, and providing perimeter surveillance in the Arctic.

Boat Barnacle“Our success in the government sector has been a major breakthrough for our small business. Pursuing and securing federal contracts was a massive undertaking and something we’re very proud of accomplishing. This award recognizes the hard work and dedication of the entire Barnacle team, and we’re incredibly thankful for the support of our community. We’re honoured to have been nominated alongside an inspiring group of local innovations.” says Barnacle CEO, Brandon Wright.
