LOWER LOCK GATE PAINTING – FENELON FALLS LOCK 34, TRENT-SEVERN WATERWAY NATIONAL HISTORIC SITE

Fenelon Falls Lock

Apr 17, 2018

As a part of an historic investment program along the Trent-Severn Waterway, the lower lock gates at Fenelon Falls Lock 34 were painted this winter. Painting and routine maintenance helps to extend the life span oflock gates by protecting against rusting, corrosion, and natural wear. This work has now been completed. The site has now been turned over to Parks Canada maintenance teams once again, to complete seasonal maintenance tasks in advance of the opening of the navigation season on May 18, 2018.

Machinery on-site combined with melting events this winter have left the lawns on the south-west side of the lock station near the operational building in need of significant repair. The contractor will return to the site when the weather cooperates to complete the restoration of the grounds. Parks Canada asks visitors to the site to remain on paved walkways in this location to allow the new grass to take hold over the spring and early summer season.

Last winter, the upper lock gates were removed and painted off-site. Due to their size and the potential for the gates to twist upon removal, the lower lock gates were painted in place. Over the winter, an enclosure was constructed around the gates to keep the weather out, and to allow the space to be heated for proper curing.
