PRE-ORDERS AVAILABLE FOR ABYC STANDARDS UPDATES

ABYC

Discounted pre-orders are available through July 1 for the annual update to the Standards and Technical Information Reports for Small Craft. Supplement 54, published by the American Boat and Yacht Council, coincides with the association's 60th anniversary year. Among the many important ABYC standards changes in the 2014-2015 supplement is H-41 Reboarding Means, Ladders, Handholds, Rails and Lifelines. Based on a project conducted by ABYC with a USCG grant, it reflects the test results on reboarding ladder rung depths and angles.

It determined that setting the lowest ladder rung deeper in the water can reduce potential person-to-propeller contact by approximately 75%. Other revised standards include A-7 Liquid and Solid Fueled Boat Heating Systems; A-28 Galvanic Isolators; H-3 Exterior Windows, Windshields, Hatches, Doors, Port Lights and Glazing Materials; H-23 Installation of Potable Water Systems for Use on Boats; H-27 Seacocks, Thru-Hull Fittings and Drain Plugs; H-40 Anchoring, Mooring and Strong Points; P-1 Installation of Exhaust Systems for Propulsion and Auxiliary Engines; and T-24 Owner/Operator's Manual.

As one of the many ABYC membership benefits, pre-order prices are $67.95 for the print or CD version, and online access through
www.abycinc.org. ABYC will also host a member webinar to review the Supplement 54 standards changes at the end of July, with details to follow.

The annual standards update will be released by August 1. Member prices will then be $79.95. Non-members can purchase the paper or CD
versions for $475, or individual standards for $50.

"It's essential for industry members to stay current on safety standards. It ensures business owners that their products and repair work
remain in full compliance with ABYC-established best practices. Consumers also look to ABYC certification as an assurance of safety and
professional service," said Brian Goodwin, ABYC technical director.

Since 1954, the non-profit American Boat & Yacht Council has developed safety standards for boat design, construction, equipage, repair and maintenance. The essential global source of marine industry technical information, ABYC's product safety standards, credentialing, education, training, and other tools help members make boating safer.
