ABYC Presents Composites Boatbuilding: The Science Behind the Procedures

ABYC’s next educational webinar is coming on Wednesday, September 23! The session will be two hours long, with a half-hour break in the middle.


Join Bob Lacovara (Principal Consultant, Convergent Composites) to discuss the fundamental science of composites with the practical techniques used in everyday boat production, starting with easy-to-understand resin chemistry and building through essential molding procedures. Gain a stronger understanding of the production techniques that contribute to high-quality boats, consistent results and long-term customer satisfaction.

Topics include:

              • Resin types, curing and the polymerization process

              • Initiators (catalysts), proper levels and environmental effects on curing

              • Viscosity, resin flow and thixotropy

              • Managing temperature and environmental conditions during molding

              • Fundamentals of quality composites production

              • Gel coat handling, equipment and application

              • Vacuum principles and vacuum infusion processes

              • Fiber-to-resin ratios, void content and optimizing fiber loading

              • Practical approaches to avoiding common quality issues in composites production
