CMP Group Ltd. Announces Sustainable Partnership for Marine Environmental Protection

Aug 13, 2024

CMP Group Ltd. (Canada) is proud to announce a partnership with Piombino Tech S.R.L. (Italy) & Quality Mark Inc. (USA) aimed at revolutionizing marine environmental protection with the introduction of the new SMartyr SCP System (Sustainable Corrosion Protection). This innovative product complements CMP Group’s other industry-leading corrosion protection products, including Martyr (Zn, Al and Mg) anodes, ICCP/ MGPS systems, Maddox anodes and PropSpeed coatings. The SMartyr SCP System represents the next step in the evolution of corrosion protection products.

Why This Matters: A Brief History

In 1824, Sir Humphry Davy invented the sacrificial anode to support the transition from wooden to metal hulls. For 200 years, this cathodic protection system has been a cornerstone of the maritime industry, supporting global trade, recreational boating, and military/naval activities. Traditional anodes made from zinc (Zn), aluminum (Al), and magnesium (Mg) alloys have varying degrees of environmental impact. Zinc, in particular, is a significant environmental concern, as it releases heavy metals into marine ecosystems, negatively impacting sea beds, flora, and fauna and is the most commonly used.

A New Era: The SMartyr SCP System

To provide an eco-friendly option in our line of traditional anodes, CMP Group has collaborated with Piombino Tech & Quality Mark to develop the SMartyr SCP System. This innovative device is designed to provide effective cathodic protection without the environmental drawbacks of traditional materials.

Key Features and Benefits of the SMartyr SCP System:

  • Innovative Technology: Internationally patented self-contained solar powered impressed current cathodic protection (ICCP) device that attaches to the vessel’s underside to protect metal components from galvanic corrosion.
  • Eco-Friendly Design: Free from elements such as cadmium, mercury, indium and copper, this ICCP system does not degrade and/ or leave deposits on the sea bed.
  • Longevity: High efficiency solar panels coupled with large capacity lithium-ion batteries housed in an IP68 waterproof case provide an expected lifespan of 2-3 years, reducing the frequency of traditional anode replacements and maintenance costs.
  • Slim Design: Hydrodynamically optimized design to minimize drag in high flow underwater applications
  • Installation Ease: Two attachment options: single bolt & double bolt designs

Target Audience

The initial target audience for the SMartyr SCP System includes OEM boat builders, technical distributors and boat yards. These segments are crucial for early adoption due to their direct involvement in the construction, maintenance and distribution of marine vessels, pleasure yachts and components.

The Partnership

This strategic partnership joins CMP’s global leadership in marine corrosion product sales & distribution built over 50 years with Piombino Tech’s cutting edge innovative and forward-thinking approach to sustainability, and Quality Mark’s leading US based electronics design expertise & world class Taiwanese sourcing & electronic manufacturing capabilities. Together, we aim to set a new standard for marine environmental protection, ensuring that the benefits of cathodic protection are achieved without compromising the health of our oceans.

Commitment to Sustainability

“Our partnership represents a significant step forward in our commitment to developing new products that are more sustainable,” said Don Hambly, President and CEO of CMP Group. “While we continue to provide the traditional Martyr anodes, the SMartyr SCP System offers our customers an alternative that aligns with modern environmental standards and the growing demand for eco-friendly options.”

Silvestro Scotto, Piombino Tech, adds:

“The idea of a green solution for cathodic protection was born from the need to enforce regulations on the dispersion of heavy metals in the sea, zinc in particular (see USA regulations). Being able to self-produce the energy necessary to guarantee cathodic protection instead of sacrificial metal is a winning element of this invention. This green solution protects against high pollution in the seas, coastal areas and marinas. Technological development, industrialization, and 40 years of experience in the cathodic protection world, are the three pillars around which we will bring this product to success, as a highly innovative green anode.”

Mark Ebbenga, Quality Mark, Inc. says:

“Quality Mark is honored to contribute to this groundbreaking advancement in marine sustainability. Our partnership on the SMartyr SCP System not only exemplifies our commitment to innovation but also reinforces our dedication to environmental stewardship. This project demonstrates the remarkable outcomes achievable when industry leaders unite with a common goal of fostering a cleaner, more sustainable future.”

Market Impact and Future Developments The introduction of the SMartyr SCP System is expected to reshape the market for cathodic protection, providing a viable, environmentally friendly option for boat owners and marine industries worldwide. This innovation not only addresses current environmental concerns but also anticipates future regulatory changes aimed at reducing mari
