Schmitt Marine Innovates Again, Now with Sileather

Schmitt Marine Steering Wheels

Apr 8, 2025

Schmitt Marine is renowned for its innovative drive, so when Siotech Corporation approached the company about using its signature silicone-based Sileather fabric for a marine steering wheel, it was up to the challenge. The proof-of-concept result is a Sileather-wrapped helm that provides OEM and custom boatbuilders with the ability to exactly match a model’s interior décor.

Sileather is the ultimate leather and vinyl replacement for marine applications. The easy-to-clean material is waterproof, UV-resistant and PFAS-free. It has a soft, natural hand feel that doesn’t get excessively hot when exposed to the sun; the “Cool Touch” version further reduces surface temperatures. Exceptionally durable, Sileather withstood over 200,000 double rubs during ASTM D4157 testing without peeling. It’s Lloyd’s register certified and IMO A.652(16) flame-resistant.

“We excel at helping our customers bring an idea to life with semi-custom projects like this,” said Roby Holland, Schmitt Marine VP of sales and marketing. “The wheel showcases our engineering and design talent, and our ability to successfully work with emerging technologies such as Sileather.”

Many Schmitt Marine products began as OEM and custom builder collaborations. The custom side of its business has grown so much during the past several years, it recently expanded its bespoke stainless steel, aluminum and carbon fiber small-part manufacturing capabilities.
