Time to repower?

Elco Electric Propulsion

Aug 21, 2023

Increasingly, owners who are repowering inboard engines modernize their vessels by choosing clean, eco-friendly Elco electric propulsion. Straightforward to install and simple to operate, the motors deliver torque and power comparable to traditional combustion engines, but without the maintenance, fumes and costly fuel dock bills.

Built in the USA, award-winning Elco inboard motors are first and foremost safe and reliable. With a 50,000-hour service life and only one moving part, they have a simple yet dynamic AC motor technology that’s highly efficient—up to 40% greater than competing DC motors. Elco offers seven compact models within its EP series that are appropriate for vessels from 15′ to 120′ in length beginning with the 24-volt EP-6, which compares to a 6 hp combustion engine. Two 48-volt models, the EP-12 and EP-20, fulfill midrange power requirements, while the 108-volt EP-40, EP-70, EP-100 and EP-200 replace ICE engines through 200 horsepower.

Electric motors provide neutral and reverse intrinsically, eliminating the cost, installation and maintenance of marine transmissions. Shifting gears is exceptionally smooth and throttle response immediate. Elco’s motors are also silent in neutral and nearly so in gear, lacking combustion engines’ constant background noise and vibration. This facilitates conversation and enhances comfort and relaxation aboard.

Elco Electric PropulsionWith an Elco inboard, there’s no waiting for the blower to run or the engine to warm up—just turn the key and go. Elco’s patented air-cooled inboard motors also eliminate the installation, maintenance and safety concerns of ICE seawater cooling and exhaust hoses and fittings. Straightforward color-coded wiring harnesses and pre-configured battery cabling makes for a flawless installation, not the hours needed to wire controls and plumb fuel systems for combustion engines. Elco’s charging systems are similarly optimized for simple installation.

Monitoring EP-6, EP-12 and EP-20 inboards is easy with the optional Elco DASH Bluetooth Dashboard Display. The system displays important data such as speed, RPM and battery functions on a paired mobile device or smartwatch using the companion app. Hardwired gauges are available as well.

Elco’s sealed motors eliminate all user-required maintenance—there isn’t even an oil dipstick to check. This frees up space within the engine compartment. In many applications, complete electric propulsion packages, including batteries, are smaller and lighter than ICE engines they replace. Elco EP-Series Inboard Motors range in price from $5,845 to $59,995 USD.

Since 1893, Elco has pioneered marine electric propulsion. It builds a wide array of inboard and outboard motors, and luxury launches.

Good Advice that You Can Share – The Art of Anchoring

Unless a boat is secured, it will drift away. If it cannot be attached to something secure, such as a dock, piling, mooring buoy, tree, or boulder, it must be anchored. There is much more to anchoring than simply tossing the anchor over the side.

An anchoring system has two parts: the anchor itself and the rode which connects the anchor to the boat. To be effective, an anchor must have good holding power, and the rode must be strong enough to withstand the strains that are put on it.
