NMEA ANNOUNCES IBEX EXHIBIT & EDUCATION LINEUP

NMEA

July 10, 2017

The National Marine Electronics Association (NMEA) has an exciting and jam-packed lineup at this year’s International Boatbuilders’ Exhibition & Conference (IBEX), the nation’s largest boatbuilding equipment show scheduled to run Sept. 19-21, 2017 at the Tampa Convention Center in Tampa, Florida. NMEA will also offer its full-day NMEA 2000® Network Installer training course from 8 am to 5 pm on Monday, Sept. 18, the day prior to the opening of IBEX. This course is designed primarily for beginners or NMEA 2000 installers who would like more information and clarity and an opportunity to share ideas with others who have installed the network.

Topics include cables, connectors, specifications, physical planning and documentation, power sources and distribution, voltage drop calculations, data messages (Parameter Group Numbers or PGNs), connecting to other data sources, network setup and troubleshooting. Students will learn the near- and long-term benefits of NMEA 2000-certified equipment, accepted installation practices for NMEA 2000 backbone cable and products, including selection of cable, power application points, and alternatives that make the network work best. They will also gain sufficient working knowledge of NMEA 2000 to troubleshoot problems if they arise and identify/repair/replace the faulty device(s) or network cabling problems. A 50-question exam will conclude the session.

NMEA instructor John Barry from Technical Marine Support in Pleasant Prairie, Wisconsin, will teach the course. Lunch is included. Students who plan to attend this “Super Session” can register online by clicking on the Education > Super Sessions link at www.ibexshow.com or contact NMEA by phone at 410-975-9425 or by email at info@nmea.org.

NMEA 2000 CONNECTED Pavilion
IBEX and NMEA are partnering to call attention to advancements in system connectivity in marine electronics. Exhibitors in the IBEX Electronics Pavilion can CONNECT their NMEA 2000-certified products to the NMEA 2000 backbone running behind their booths.

“Our goal is to offer NMEA members within the IBEX Electronics Pavilion a very unique opportunity to draw attention to their exhibit and a live demonstration of NMEA 2000-certified products,” said Mark Reedenauer, NMEA President & Executive Director. “Show guests can see NMEA 2000 devices in operation sending and sharing data from one end of the aisle to the other.” A prominent floor sticker in front of each participating exhibitor’s booth will identify their products as “CONNECTED.” Interested manufacturers can contact Tina Sanderson at 843-936-6112 or email tina@ibexshow.com.

Other exciting 1.5-hour marine electronics seminars offered by NMEA include:

Engine and Tank Monitoring Using NMEA 2000
Tuesday, Sept. 19, 12:30-2:00 pm
We will cover the various technologies available for converting engine data and fluid levels to be monitored over an NMEA 2000 network. We will demonstrate the differences, best practices and basic setup of each technology, and explain the practical and advanced uses for the data.

Speaker: Peter Braffitt, Gemeco Marine Accessories

Remote Security and Vessel Monitoring
Tuesday, Sept. 19, 3:30-5:00 pm
Checking on our houses and cars remotely is not a futuristic concept. The power is out, the automobile has been moved, the thermostat has disengaged-this information is fed into our smart phones so we can act quickly. The people who expect this level of convenience are also the customers who buy your boats and want that same type of service if the hull takes on water or a burglar breaks in. We’ll review what’s available-from water sensors and video surveillance to checking the fridge temperature. Learn how to retrofit or manufacture a vessel to accommodate demands for remote monitoring.
Speakers: Brian Kane, GOST; Daniel Harper, Siren Marine

Onboard WiFi Connectivity
Wednesday, Sept. 20, 12:30-2:00 pm
We’ll review networking and communication options for leisure and commercial vessels to stay connected 24/7 via WiFi, cellular data, and satellite. We will also review the methods, services, and systems to help marinas and boatyards be profitable while improving each connecting experience.
Speaker: Jeff Graham, Wave WiFi

Advances in Modern Radar Technology
Wednesday, Sept. 20, 3:30-5:00 pm
Radar manufacturers will overview solid state radars, their benefits to recreational boating, and what the technology may mean for the future. The panel will show how radar is more accessible and easier to use for increased levels of situational awareness and safety for occasional and advanced users.

Speakers: Experts from Garmin, Raymarine, Simrad and Furuno

NMEA OneNet: The Marine Ethernet Standard
Thursday, Sept. 21, 8:30-10 am
Boatbuilders are seeing more marine electronics with Internet-based functions-many using Ethernet. NMEA will soon release NMEA OneNet®, a standard that is based on Internet Protocol Version 6 (IPV6) and Ethernet IEE 802.3. The OneNet Committee, composed of 80 marine electronics manufacturers, has worked for nearly five years to create this standard. We will discuss its various modules and describe how OneNet addresses cyber security. Prepare for the future of marine interface electronics.
Speaker: Steve Spitzer, NMEA Director of Standards
