The Vancouver International Boat Show, February 8-12, 2012 is being held at BC Place and the Granville Island Maritime Market and Marina and one of the show highlights will be appearances by Russell Newberry from "Deadliest Catch".

He’s weathered perilous storms and frigid temperatures, suffered body-crushing work conditions, and volatile crew conflict, all in search of a treasured bounty of Alaska King crabs. Now, Russell Newberry, the swashbuckling deckhand of Discovery Channel’s hit documentary/reality series Deadliest Catch makes his debut at the Vancouver International Boat Show with 2 daily sessions, sharing tales of what it’s really like to risk it all in the world’s most dangerous profession.

Entering its 8th season on the Discovery Channel, the aptly named Deadliest Catch chronicles the real-life events aboard fishing vessels in the Bering Sea during the Alaskan king crab fishing seasons – considered even more dangerous than the already extremely hazardous average commercial fishing job. With the death rate during the main crab seasons averaging out to nearly one fisherman per week, and an almost guaranteed risk of injury among most crab fleets, it comes as no surprise that the series’ title reflects the inherently high risks facing most crab boat crews. Severe weather conditions marked by frigid gales, rogue waves and ice formations, as well as the dangers of working with such heavy machinery on a constantly rolling boat deck have bred some of the Bering Sea’s toughest seamen, and crabbing-veteran Russell is no exception.

Since catching his first crab commercially aboard the concrete fishing vessel “Granite Sea”, Russell has been passionate about crab fishing, working summers as a Dungeness crabber during high school, and later earning a reputation as a hardworking, dependable “crustacean excavator” aboard vessels out on the Bering Sea.

Now a seasoned professional fisherman, with over 20 years of experience battling the perilous, icy water of the Bering Sea, Russell is making his debut at the Vancouver International Boat Show to meet and greet fans, sign autographs, and share stories about what it takes to work the world’s most dangerous job.
