Brighton Swing Bridge

Sara Anghel, executive director and vice-president of government relations for the National Marine Manufacturers Association (NMMA) Canada joins The Honourable Leona Aglukkaq, Minister of the Environment, as a participant in the announcement of $285 million in infrastructure investment for the Trent-Severn Waterway in Ontario earlier today.  Anghel was invited to speak as a representative of the entire recreational boating industry.

“Boating access is a core of what our industry strives to achieve for boaters and our members and I want to thank the Government of Canada for this historic announcement which does just that,” commented Anghel at a press conference earlier today.

“Our industry has engaged with the federal government for a number of years to bring to the forefront the importance of recreational boating to Canada’s heritage and economy – particularly for the tourism and hospitality sectors. We thank you for considering our input and for making the important commitment announced here today.”

According to a release issued by Parks Canada, the investment includes the replacement of the Brighton Road Swing Bridge (located in Quinte West), the rehabilitation of Trenton Dam 1 (in Trenton) and the replacement and rehabilitation of several other bridges, dams and locks throughout the Trenton-Severn Waterway.  The investment aims to protect and secure the future of the waterway while creating and protecting job opportunities for Canadians.  Over 43 infrastructure projects at the Trent-Severn Waterway National Historic Site will be financed through the investment.

Joining The Honourable Leona Aglukkaq, Minister of the Environment and Anghel was Rick Norlock, Member of Parliament for Northumberland-Quinte West, Daryl Kramp, Member of Parliament for Prince Edward-Hastings and Bruce Stanton, Member of Parliament for Simcoe-North.

“On many of these waters, there are countless Canadians who share a passion for boating and spend precious hours with friends and family on the water,” adds Anghel. “We are honoured to represent the recreational marine industry at this historic event.”
