SNAME ANNUAL MEDALS AND AWARDS TO BE PRESENTED AT THE SNAME MARITIME CONVENTION 2016

SNAME will present its annual medals and awards during the SNAME Maritime Convention (SMC) 2016, November 1-5 at the Hyatt Regency Bellevue in Bellevue, Washington.

SNAME will recognize three individuals for their outstanding contributions to naval architecture, marine engineering or ocean engineering and ship research. The annual achievement medals will be presented at the SNAME Annual Banquet on Thursday, November 3.

THE DAVID W. TAYLOR MEDAL for notable achievement in naval architecture and/or marine engineering will be presented to Professor Dracos Vassalos, The University of Strathclyde, Glasgow, Scotland.

THE VICE ADMIRAL EMORY S. “JERRY” LAND MEDAL for outstanding accomplishment in the marine field will be presented to William L. Hurley, Jr., Chairman, Glosten, Inc.

THE DR. KENNETH S.M. DAVIDSON MEDAL for outstanding accomplishment in scientific accomplishment in marine research will be presented to Torgeir Moan, Norwegian University of Science and Technology, Department of Marine Technology.

SNAME will also recognize the following individuals for their outstanding technical contributions. These achievements will be recognized on Friday, November 4 at the SMC.

THE WILLIAM M. KENNEDY AWARD for outstanding service and contribution in the development of systems and planning applying to shipbuilding and ship repair will be presented to Harvey Walpert.

THE AMERICAN BUREAU OF SHIPPING–CAPTAIN JOSEPH H. LINNARD PRIZE is presented to the author(s) of the best paper contributed to the Proceedings of the Society, as recommended by the SMC Papers Committee. The 2016 American Bureau of Shipping-Captain Joseph H. Linnard Prize will be presented to Akio Usami, Naohiko Kishimoto, Hiroki Kusumoto, Fujio Kaneko, and Takehiro Inoue for their paper, “Cryogenic leakage risk analysis for FLNG and use of brittle crack arresting material as a risk mitigation measure”.

THE VICE ADMIRAL E. L. COCHRANE AWARD is presented to the author(s) of the best peer-reviewed paper published by the Society from conferences, symposia, “Featured Papers,” non-ship production papers of the Journal of Ship Production and Design, and non-archival papers presented at the SMC, as recommended by the Featured Papers Committee. The 2016 Vice Admiral E. L. Cochrane Award will be presented to R.U.F. Polach, S. Ehlers, and S.O. Erikstad for their paper, “Decision-based design approach for ships operating in open water and ice”, published in the Journal of Ship Production and Design, November 2015. Honorable Mentions: Maro Corak, Josko Parunov and C. Guedes Soares for their paper, “Probabilistic Load Combination Factors of Wave and Whipping Bending Moments”, published in the Journal of Ship Research, March 2015; and Jørgen Juncher Jensen for his paper, “Conditional Stochastic Processes Applied to Wave Load Predictions”, published in the Journal of Ship Research, March 2015.

THE ELMER L. HANN AWARD is presented to the author(s) of the best paper on ship production delivered at the Ship Production Symposium, as recommended by the Journal of Ship Production and Design Committee. The 2016 Elmer L. Hann Award will be presented to Junghyun Lee, et al, for the paper, “Tolerance Analysis and Diagnosis Model of Compliant Block Assembly Considering Welding Deformation”. Honorable Mentions: Jungseo Park, et al, for the paper, “Similarity Assessment Method for Automated Curved Plate Forming”; and Christopher Rose, et al, for the paper, “Automatically Determining the Latest Possible Equipment Installation Times for Shipbuilding”.

2016 CERTIFICATES OF APPRECIATION for individuals who have demonstrated outstanding, dedicated service to the Society will be presented to: Dr. Hans-Georg Payer, for over 11 years of service and active participation on the Fellows Committee; Dr. Matthew Tedesco, for his dedicated service and active participation as the Editor of (mt); David Singer, for six years of service and active participation as the chair of the JSPD Committee; Bruce Rosenblatt, for 22 years of service and active participation on the SNAME Maritime Convention Committee; Todd Grove, in appreciation for serving as the Chairman of the World Maritime Technology Conference 2015; Roger Basu, in appreciation for serving as the Chairman, Technical Program of the World Maritime Technology Conference 2015; Krish Thiagarajan, In appreciation for serving as the Chairman, Technical Program of the World Maritime Technology Conference 2015 and Mary Saady, for her years of NSRP Support and her support of the SNAME Maritime Convention and the SMC committee.

THE FACULTY ADVISOR OF THE YEAR AWARD is presented to a Faculty Advisor from a SNAME Student Section whose leadership and service qualities have contributed to the program and operations of a Student Section of the Society, as recommended by the Student Steering Committee. The 2016 Award will be presented to Professor Krish Thiagarajan, University of Maine Student Section. In addition to this recognition, and thanks to a generous donation by Bruce and Dorothy Rylander Johnson, a $5,000 Scholarship will be awarded to a deserving student member from the University of Maine Student Section.
