Oct 30, 2018

Join the Maritime Museum of BC for a short commemorative presentation on the sinking of the S.S. Princess Sophia, followed by the unveiling of a new plaque, which will be permanently installed in the Parade of Ships memorial wall in Victoria’s Inner Harbour.

The Victoria-based coastal liner struck Vanderbilt Reef, in Alaska’s Lynn Canal, on October 23,1918 and sank on October 25,1918. An estimated 367 passengers and crew perished when the ship sank. The sinking of the S.S. Princess Sophia remains the largest marine tragedy in the Pacific Northwest.

The event will begin at 10:30 am on October 25th, at the Maritime Museum of BC, with a short presentation by Rachel Trudeau, Public Engagement Manager of the museum. The plaque unveiling will follow immediately.

A documentary on the sinking of the vessel, as well as the enlarged replica of the newly released S.S. Princess Sophia Canadian coin, will be on display at the event.
