Volvo Penta’s Next-Generation Marine Propulsion System

Volvo Penta’s next-generation D4 and D6 marine propulsion systems have been honored among the top products of the year by Boating Industry magazine.

The top 50 boating products appeared in the May issue of the monthly boating trade magazine. They were chosen by the editors from hundreds of nominations, based on their impact on the industry, innovation and how they advanced their category.

“Adding new elements to a very successful engine line is already no simple task. Volvo Penta took things another step further and reengineered up to 85 percent of the D4 and D6 marine propulsion systems. Adding new versions of electronic control systems, a new fuel injection system, turbocharger and supercharger and much more, Volvo Penta’s next-generation D4 and D6 marine propulsion packages are sure to impress in a multitude of different applications,” said Adam Quandt, managing editor of Boating Industry.

The award-winning D4 and D6 marine propulsion packages have been re-engineered with redesigned engines, new DPI sterndrive for silent and smooth shifting, updated IPS drive and an enhanced Electronic Vessel Control (EVC) platform. The comprehensive makeover, which encompassed more than 85 percent of the engines’ design and component selection, took over 300,000 engineering hours and 40,000 test hours.

The benefits of this hard work enhance almost every aspect that boat owners consider important – including performance, reliability, durability, running costs and maintenance. The improvements also deliver a more enjoyable experience, with a more comfortable ride and greater maneuverability.

A panel of journalists from Boating Writers International selected the Volvo Penta D4/D6 engines for the IBEX Innovation Award in October 2019, and the DPI driveline received top innovation honors at the Dusseldorf International Boat Show in January.

“This important recognition from the editors of a respected trade publication validates our massive re-engineering project for the proven four- and six-liter marine propulsion packages,” said Martin Bjuve, president and CEO of Volvo Penta of the Americas. “It’s all a part of our strategic philosophy of continuous innovation as the key to growing the boating industry.”

The association is very well supported and virtually any significant marine electronics company that you could name, was represented there on the Exhibitor list at the Expo as well as all being NMEA members and very supportive of the organization.
