Help Fight the Threat of the Luxury Tax – Send A Letter to Your MP
May 11, 2021
Canada’s marine trade associations are all working together to help fight the Liberal government’s Luxury Tax and attached here is a pre-made letter that you can send to your MP to add weight and credibility to their efforts to block this tax.
The marine trade associations asked their members to fill out a luxury tax survey and that input gave them useful data to work into their messaging to the government to fight the luxury tax.
Attached here is a template letter to personalize with your company information and send to your Member of Parliament (MP) expressing your concern about the luxury tax on new boats valued above $250,000. It will be especially important for businesses in Liberal and NDP ridings to reach out to their MP.
After sending your letter, follow-up and ask for a brief meeting with your MP to discuss the matter further. You can look up your local MP’s contact info here: (type your full postal code in the search bar).
While the grass roots efforts to ask you to write to your MP is very important, together Canada’s marine trade associations continue their advocacy work, requesting to meet with all the relevant MPs, political staff, and departmental officials to emphasize how the luxury tax will hurt local businesses.
A Budget Bill is usually split into a couple of parts due to size and technical nature. The first Budget Implementation Act (‘BIA’) was tabled earlier this week in the House of Commons; the luxury tax isn’t in the Act, which means it will be tabled in the Fall when the government tables BIA 2. This likely means our industry has until the Fall to work with officials on amendments and continue to push for removal of the Luxury Tax.
Follow your marine trade association’s communications for ongoing information in this vital matter.
