Three seminars on advancements in marine electronics technology will be held at the METS 2013 (Amsterdam) trade show on November 19 and 20. Organized by the National Marine Electronics Association (NMEA), the seminars will cover Automatic Identification Systems (AIS), CHIRP sonar, and the NMEA OneNet® standard that is currently under development.

As part of the marine electronics education programs at METS, the NMEA will also offer an NMEA 2000® ConnnectFest, a "live" demonstration of the NMEA 2000® networking standard in operation.

ConnectFest and the NMEA-produced seminars are free and open to the public. The NMEA stand (ENT.02) is located in the Holland Complex entrance (first floor).

The National Marine Electronics Association has invited leading experts on Automatic Identification Systems (AIS) to participate in a round-table discussion about the latest developments in AIS technology. The experts will discuss advancements and improvements to both Class A and Class B AIS systems. This discussion is an opportunity to learn about the advantages and disadvantages of Class A and Class B and the technologies that increase vessel safety, reduce VHF traffic, and improve situational awareness.

AIS information supplements marine radar, which remains the primary tool for collision avoidance. AIS provides unique vessel identification, position, course, and speed information, which can be displayed on a variety of display devices.

Learn about the new NMEA OneNet® ethernet standard, which is planned for release at the end of 2014. This new standard will transport NMEA 2000® messages using Internet Protocol and video simultaneously on one cable. More than 25 manufacturers have participated for two years in the development of this standard based on IPv6 protocol, including experts from Cisco, Microsoft, Electronic Telecommunication Research Institute (ETRI) South Korea, the U.S. Coast Guard, and the Canadian Coast Guard. OneNet® does not replace the NMEA 2000® CAN bus, but it is an essential addition for the next generation of onboard electronic systems designs.
