SIMCOE NORTH MPP INTRODUCES BILL TO PROTECT TRADESPEOPLE FROM COLLEGE OF TRADES FEES

College of Trades

Simcoe North MPP Garfield Dunlop introduced a private member’s bill to ensure employers of tradespeople never have to pay a fee to the Ontario College of Trades.

“There’s no reason if you’ve got a hair dressing salon or a sheet metal shop or whatever the trade may be that you should be paying a fee to the regulating college,” Dunlop said Tuesday. “I want to see it taken out.”

In April, the college began charging tradespeople in 22 licensed trades — in which being a member of the college is compulsory — an annual fee of $122.

Originally, the Government of Ontario wanted to charge the employers of these tradespeople as well.

“(The college) had so much resistance in the beginning that they actually waived the fees and said there would be no fees for the foreseeable future,” Dunlop said. “The bill I’m proposing is to really take away (the) chance they could ever have membership fees for employers.”
