AMTA ANNOUNCES MARINE SERVICE TECHNICIAN CERTIFICATE OF QUALIFICATION EXAM

AMTA

The Atlantic Marine Trades Association has announced that a Nova Scotia provincial Certificate of Qualification exam for the Marine Service Technician trade is now available to people who have substantial experience working in the occupation. Skilled tradespeople working in the industry are encouraged to write the examination. Having sufficient numbers of tradespeople certified in the occupation will allow companies to hire more Nova Scotians to participate in apprenticeship training programs.

To qualify to write the Certificate of Qualification exam, you must be able to provide documented proof of the following:
–  12 000 hours of hands-on experience working in the trade; and
–  References from two qualified individuals who are able to vouch for your skills in the trade (i.e., employers or co-workers).
–  Documented proof of hours may be in the form of a letter from an employer(s). There is a sample template included in the application package. If you are self-employed, you may use an affidavit, plus other supporting documentation, such as your business number from the Registrar of Joint Stock Companies, Association Memberships, or other proof of business activity. An Affidavit is a written statement which the applicant has sworn to or affirmed officially to tell the truth. Affidavits must be signed and stamped by a Canadian recognized Notary Public, Commissioner of Oaths, Justice of the Peace or Lawyer and bear their seal.

An application package and materials to assist you in preparing for and writing the exam are available from the Apprenticeship Training division of the Department of Labour and Advanced Education. To request an application package, please contact the Apprenticeship Training division at one of the telephone numbers listed below and ask to speak to the “Training Officer” responsible for the Marine Service Technician trade.
Halifax: (902) 424-5651 Toll Free: 1-800-494-5651

The usual fee associated with applying for and writing the certificate of qualification exam is being reduced for a period of time to encourage more skilled tradespeople to become certified.

– For 12 months starting July 1, 2013, the fee will be $143.85.  The regular fee of $719.20 will be reinstated on July 1, 2014.

About a month ago, I traveled to Charlevoix, MI for a special press event to introduce the H9 to a small group of journalists.
