  • GARMIN INTRODUCES SIDEVU AND DOWNVU SIDE-SCANNING SONAR

    Garmin has just announced their new down and side-scanning sonar technology called SideVü and DownVü.  Garmin will also be offering a brand new line of standalone echo fishfinders and echoMAP combination units with built-in DownVü capability.  A software update that allows any new GPSMAP 500 and 700 series units to be DownVü compatible will be released in addition to these units.  The company will also be offering the GCV 10, their SideVü and DownVü sonar black box with CHIRP scanning technology.  The GCV 10 will provide a near-picture quality image and is compatible with the echoMAP 70 series, GPSMAP 700, 800 and 1000 series.

  • NMEA LEADERSHIP CHANGES ANNOUNCED

    The National Marine Electronics Association (NMEA) has announced that Johnny Lindstrom, a design engineer at Westport Shipyard, will become chairman of the NMEA board of directors effective January 1, 2014. Lindstrom will succeed David Gratton, who is completing a three-year term.

    “Johnny will be highly effective in his leadership role as chairman,” said Gratton. “He is known for accomplishing in one hour tasks that take some people weeks or months. I know that our timeline for getting things done is going to change dramatically.”

    This past Sunday, October 27 and Monday, October 28, the 12th Annual C.C. Marine Trade Show was held in Niagara Falls, Ontario at the Scotiabank Convention Centre. In spite of it being a busy time of year for all the marine dealers, the turnout at the C.C. Marine Trade Show seemed really good. The Scotiabank Convention Center provides very spacious accommodations, but the show floor was busy and buzzing throughout. The conference was a testament to the value of good planning.

  • SIMCOE NORTH MPP INTRODUCES BILL TO PROTECT TRADESPEOPLE FROM COLLEGE OF TRADES FEES

    Simcoe North MPP Garfield Dunlop introduced a private member’s bill to ensure employers of tradespeople never have to pay a fee to the Ontario College of Trades. “There’s no reason if you’ve got a hair dressing salon or a sheet metal shop or whatever the trade may be that you should be paying a fee to the regulating college,” Dunlop said Tuesday. “I want to see it taken out.” In April, the college began charging tradespeople in 22 licensed trades — in which being a member of the college is compulsory — an annual fee of $122.

    Debbie Poole will now hold the position of President and General Manager. Debbie brings to the position over 30 years of business experience and connection to the Marine industry. She has owned and operated Lakeside Sewing Limited since 1983 as well as working with Buckeye Marine in various capacities. Debbie was the president of the Ontario Marine Operators Association and currently holds a position on its advisory board. She continues to sit on the Toronto Boat Show Committee, which she has done for the past 15 years.

  • BENETEAU AMERICA AND AMERICAN SAILING ASSOCIATION CREATE PARTNERSHIP

    Beneteau America and the American Sailing Association (ASA) are entering in a new strategic partnership, as disclosed this afternoon during a press event at the Annapolis boat show, the largest sailboat show in North America.

    Laurent Fabre, President of Beneteau America, and Lenny Shabes, ASA’s founder and chairman of the board, have announced their joint collaboration on the design of a new ASA-exclusive sail training vessel. The new sailboat, ASA First Trainer, will be produced in Beneteau’s factory of Marion, South Carolina.

  • ABYC REMEMBERS BOARD CHAIRMAN JACK HORNOR

    John Carl "Jack" Hornor, the Chairman of the Board for the American Boat & Yacht Council (ABYC) and leading marine industry leader, died October 1, 2013 of brain disease at Hospice of Queen Anne's in Centreville, MD. He was 68. Hornor celebrated life on the water as a sailor. He was a naval architect and marine surveyor with many ties to the recreational boating industry.  Hornor was the founder and owner of Marine Survey & Design Company and was a mentor to many in the marine industry.
