Volvo Penta Launches Two New V8 Gasoline Engines

Volvo Penta has just launched two new V8 gasoline engines for their sterndrive and inboard applications; the V8-225 and the V8-380.

Claimed to be the cleanest engine ever from Volvo Penta, the V8-225 combines fuel economy of a V6 with high altitude power, durability and class leading acceleration.

With eight cylinders and 5.7 liter displacement, the V8-225 delivers torque, power and world class performance across the entire speed range. The engine’s advanced fuel management system produces better fuel mileage, increased reliability and lower emissions by offering sophisticated engine management strategies within a proven fuel and control system design according to the Volvo Penta press release.

“The fuel efficiency of the V8-225 puts this engine in a class by itself,” said Marcia Kull, “Vice President-Marine Sales of Volvo Penta of the Americas. “Combined with Volvo Penta legendary durability and exceptional performance at elevation, this engine is in a class by itself. It's perfect for fleet owners, high altitude boaters or anyone seeking a rock solid 225 hp performance package.”

The V8-225 is the cleanest engine offered by Volvo Penta, comfortably meeting the most stringent five-star voluntary engine emissions standards set by the California Air Resources Board (CARB). Volvo Penta was able to achieve such low emissions by equipping this engine family with dual three way catalytic converters and heated oxygen sensors, and by optimizing the engine calibration. “CARB try appreciates Volvo Penta’s effor to prove out compliance to cleaner standards and its commitment to improving air quality as evidenced by its introduction of the V8-225,” said Annette Hebert, Chief, Mobile Source Operations Division.

The new Volvo Penta V8-380 packs a lot of power through advanced technologies.

The V8-380 marks a new generation of high performing Volvo Penta V8 gasoline marine engines. This is an intensely powerful engine that combines efficiency, strength and durability into a state-of-the-art package that delivers on performance and exceeds EPA/CARB requirements.

Volvo Penta’s advanced technology and design innovation combine to give the V8-380 more horsepower with 12% less fuel consumption. The engine includes other key features such as Variable Valve Timing (VVT), optimized for maximum low end torque and high end horsepower, and more than 270 pounds of weight savings, making it faster, lighter, and more efficient than previous big block powerplants while still only requiring 87 octane fuel.

Tough enough to haul a heavy boat, the V8-380 is also the same engine used in GM’s current truck line up, and is considered the most durable Volvo Penta has ever launched. Advancements such as an aluminum exhaust system as part of the complete freshwater cooling system provide additional durability, protection from corrosion, and savings over the life of the engine.
