CDI Electronics LLC, the leading manufacturer of aftermarket ignitions for outboard engines announced January 4th, 2021 that it has been awarded utility patent protection for its innovative 2- Wire RGB(W) Controller design. The U.S. Patent & Trademark Office awarded utility Patent No. 10,880,974 to Pyramid Time Systems of Meriden, CT, who worked exclusively with CDI to develop the design.

CDI Electronics, Kevin Hannula of the Kroes Group and Pyramid and developed an approach which utilizes only 2 wires to distribute the RGB(W) signal to every LED light source on the vessel or vehicle, thereby significantly reducing wiring costs and complexity associated with RGB(W) wiring. Builders or aftermarket installers can utilize existing single-color LED wiring to convert to RGB(W) without extensive re-wiring of the vessel or vehicle.

CDI Sales & Marketing Manager Frank Ahlbin explained, “Our RGB(W) Controller design has been accepted by both pontoon and fiberglass builders because of its simplicity, low cost and ease of installation. The CDI controller design provides many benefits found in more complex and expensive approaches to RGB(W) deployment. This innovation has led to greater adoption of RGB(W) schemes as builders can price the option more economically. Further, the builder can select any brand of LED lighting to use with our controller instead of being tied to a light supplier’s controller.”

CDI Electronics LLC and Balmar LLC are sister companies serving the marine and recreational vehicle industries over 35 years with innovative outboard ignition components, engine diagnostic software and DC charging solutions.
