Halifax Harbour 2017

Every year. Sail Nova Scotia hosts a meeting of the Halifax Port Authority, representatives from the Canadian Navy, Halifax Police Service, Waterfront Development, CHS and the Yacht Clubs serving the recreational boating public in Halifax Harbour. This year’s meeting had presentations by the Port of Halifax Pilots, by Waterfront Development about the Tall Ships and provided updates from all attendees.

The Port will be very busy in the summer of 2017, not only are sections of the shoreline under construction, but the Port will be hosting 173 Cruise Ships this year, Canada 150 celebrations, the 2017 Tall Ships and many Yacht Club events.
The Halifax Pilots request the following:

• All vessels including recreational boats must not impede the passage of large commercial vessels or naval vessels within the waters of the Port
• All vessels including recreational boats should monitor Channel 12 when operating within the Port

The Pilots say that their visibility when operating large ships is very limited so do not assume that they can see smaller vessels that are within 500 metres of them. For more information, visit www.altanticpilotage.com

Flare Disposal in the Maritimes: Canadian Power and Sail Squadrons

CPS-ECP has a partnership with Transport Canada and CIL Dealers to undertake a project on education and awareness of safety equipment, the care and maintenance of that equipment and how to safely and effectively use and dispose of flares.
If your flares have a manufacture date of 2013 or earlier they have or will expire this year. You can’t light them, throw them in the water or in your household garbage to dispose of them. Disposing of expired flares has been an ongoing dilemma for boaters across the country. To help boaters dispose of expired flares in a safe and environmentally responsible manner CPS-ECP and selected CIL Dealers are hosting Safety Equipment Education and Flare Disposal Days. On these days, you will be offered the opportunity to learn about required safety equipment and you can bring your outdated flares to be properly disposed of, free of charge.
