Newest scientific developments highlighted in HISWA Symposium on Yacht Design and Yacht Construction

The 24th International HISWA Symposium on Yacht Design and Yacht Construction will kick off the METSTRADE week at RAI Amsterdam on 14-15 November. This distinguished two-day scientific symposium will focus on a variety of fascinating subjects, developments and cutting-edge technology, from the optimisation of electronic propulsion for fast yachts and structural design inspired by nature to parametric design and the hydrodynamics of wind-assisted ships. Well-known names in the industry such as Feadship and Damen along with scientific and research institutes like Delft University and MARIN will showcase the latest insights.

The programme of the International HISWA Symposium on Yacht Design and Yacht Construction is intended for builders, designers, scientists, engineers and R&D experts, as well as students with an interest in the yachtbuilding industry. The 2016 edition will focus on data monitoring, sustainability, hybrid propulsion, advanced propulsion, structural limits, design limits and sailing yachts.

Sharing know-how

Renowned universities, knowledge institutions and companies from around the globe will share their findings with the audience. For example, Kasper Uithof, project manager at Hull Vane, will give a lecture on the application of the Hull Vane on yachts. “This fixed wing under the aft segment of the vessel recovers part of the energy in the wake and provides fuel savings,” he explains. “We will show how Computational Fluid Dynamics are used to calculate the optimal shape.”

Damen will present its unique SeaXplorer expedition yacht. “More and more owners are heading to geographically and climatically extreme areas of the world,” says product director Mark Vermeulen. “A trip to the Arctic asks more in terms of resistance to storms and ice or self-sufficiency in food and fuel than standard yacht designs can provide. Damen engineers have pulled out all the stops to meet the strict IMO Polar Code without compromising on the luxurious accommodations.” The Damen lecture will explain the development of the SeaXplorer, including its ‘double acting hull’ concept.

A week to remember

Starting as it does on Monday, the two-day symposium will serve as one of the intros to the METSTRADE week and a prelude to its main event, the METSTRADE Show, which takes place from Tuesday 15 to Thursday 17 November. More information about this exciting week is available via the exhibition page, and relevant resources and exchanges can be had throughout the year – and especially in the lead up to the show itself – via the recently launched METSTRADE online community.

CMRA

As of July 1st, 2024 the embargo is lifted on the photos and information about Four Winns’ new H9 model and it is stunning!

About a month ago, I traveled to Charlevoix, MI for a special press event to introduce the H9 to a small group of journalists. The water and the weather were a bit cool but the sun was out and Lake Charlevoix was calm and the Four Winns H9 was very impressive. This is a 29-foot 11-inch luxury day boat with a 9- foot 2-inch beam and it features a fabulous expansive flat floor all the way from the bow rider area to the transom and the swim platform.
