QUADRANT MARINE – HOW TO BE A MARINE SERVICE TECHNICIAN BY 20

Austin

Oct 23, 2018

Austin Edwards told students and parents at the Saanich School’s “Parents as Informed Partners” night how he completed his 4-year Marine Service Technician Ticket before his 21st birthday. By starting his trades training at Quadrant while he was in Grade 11 at Parkland Secondary, he got credit towards high school and MST technical training at the same time. Quadrant is just one of the training partners with Saanich Schools where Dual Credit students like Austin can fast track their career goals.

Austin completed his advanced competencies and final exam this past spring. He works at Raven Marine in Sidney and specializes in mechanical systems installations.

You can do it too! The Quadrant Marine’s apprenticeship program trains Marine Service Technicians for careers in the recreational marine industry. Technology is always changing and on-board systems are increasingly complex. The range of required skills and opportunities is extremely diverse as companies’ needs range from full service to highly specialized. Marine Service Technicians work in composites, wood and metal on sail and power vessels from kayaks to yachts.

Join us as we build and market British Columbia as a Marine Service Centre Of Excellence.

Become a BC Marine Technician, it’s an incredibly rewarding career and there are a ton of job opportunities for young professionals. Marine Service Technicians (MSTs) are usually employed by marinas, repair yards, boat builders and specialty marine businesses that provide equipment, repair, and maintenance services. Quadrant developed the British Columbia MST apprenticeship training program to expose trainees to all aspects of the repair and maintenance of recreational and small commercial vessels. Specialization comes with practical skill development in the workplace. The MST training program covers 12 areas of study and emphasizes practical skill through competency-based training and assessment. Our instructors are marine industry experts with extensive experience in their particular fields.

The association is very well supported and virtually any significant marine electronics company that you could name, was represented there on the Exhibitor list at the Expo as well as all being NMEA members and very supportive of the organization.
