Ben Gartside Retires from Quadrant Marine Institute

Ben Gartside

June 10, 2025

Ben Gartside, owner of Gartside Marine Engines in Sidney and Oakbay, BC has recently retired from his instructor position with Quadrant Marine Institute after more than 30 years of engagement.

Despite growing up sailing and racing, Ben’s original path started in a UK university studying geology and exploring various related occupations. When his van transmission broke down, he had just enough money to buy the Haines service manual and some parts to fix it himself. His dad recognized Ben’s mechanical aptitude and offered Ben’s services to the local Yanmar dealer free of charge. His true career path unfolded from there…

Moving with his family to Canada, Ben worked for Sidney Propeller and finished his qualification in Marine Engine Repair in 1986. By 89’ he started Gartside Marine Engines on Harbour Road where his successful shop remains today.

After being ‘roped into developing and writing content for mechanical technical training’ for what is now the Marine Service Technician (MST) apprenticeship. Ben’s training involvement fully began in 1996 by teaching all the mechanical installation units for the newly started Quadrant Marine Institute. In the decades since, he has slowly passed his teaching load onto his own graduated apprentices, and previous students, until his retirement in 2024.

Over the last five decades, Ben has built a successful business with two locations, an 11-person staff, and an exceptional reputation. Despite very low employee turnover, he’s personally helped over 30 people join our industry, and through the apprenticeship process, and as an instructor he has trained many, many more.

He enjoys teaching others and insists it is important for people to learn new skills. As a self-described shy kid, Ben lists the highlights of being an instructor as giving him confidence with public speaking and the great community of instructor support. “In the past, employers were less interested in training and just wanted to hire skill, but that’s not possible anymore. Training is vital to this industry.”

Thank you, Ben. You’ve been a vital part of Quadrant’s success and the success of those you’ve inspired with your knowledge, skill, and dedication!
