Environment Canada Announces Web Technical Guidance Document for Marine Emission Regulations
Boating Industry Canada readers can now access a Technical Guidance Document for the Marine Spark-Ignition Engine, Vessel and Off-Road Recreational Vehicle Emission Regulations (Regulation) under the Canadian Environmental Protection Act, 1999.
This document is intended to aid in the understanding of the Regulations and consequently compliance with the Regulations. It is available on Environment Canada's website at: http://www.ec.gc.ca/lcpe-cepa/eng/regulations/detailreg.cfm?intReg=109.
The new Regulation came into force on April 5, 2011. The Regulation introduced standards, beginning with the 2012 model year, to reduce smog-forming emissions from marine spark-ignition outboard engines, personal watercraft, inboard engines, off-road motorcycles, snowmobiles, all-terrain vehicles, and utility vehicles. The Regulation also sets standards for vessels of the 2015 and later model years. The Regulations apply to companies who manufacture, distribute, or import such products for the purpose of sale in Canada, and to persons who import such products for their own use.
Be aware that in some cases, a Canadian marine dealer may be regarded as the importer and as a result, may be required to do the applications and paperwork to ensure that these boats and engines comply.
